i spent (or wasted) a lot of time last weekend rolling out a band new exchange 2007 install. to keep a long story short, i was installing it for my own personal learning platform. i figured i would roll it out on some virtual servers (using hyper V) i brought up a 2008 DC on a new domain on one Virtual Machine (VM), and then exchange 2007 SP1 on other 2008 VM which i first joined to the brand new domain. i got the whole thing up and running and routing mail nicely, outlook was connecting across my network and mail was doing what it should be, certificates were all trusted and i was quite happy with the outcome. until i tested RPC over HTTPS (outlook anywhere as they call it in 2007 exchange), it wouldnt work - well thats not completely true almost by accident on my 2nd reinstall i discovered something very weird, if i connected as 'administrator' i could get rcp over https to connect and no other users worked.(and here is the weird part) If i looked at the users mail box setting for the administrator users - it said the last login was by machine/administrator and not domain/administrator, and on the other users mailboxes it reported unknown SID's even though it logged in fine over the LAN via standard RPC's i tried both domain/administrator and machine/administrator to login via rpc over https and it let me log in. at this point i was completely puzzled. incidentally i had the same password for the local (machine) admin as i did for the domain admin i changed the machine/administrator password to see if could get an idea what is going on and after doing that i couldnt login rpc over https at all. i also noticed that the iis folders did not have permissions set for any domain accounts at all. and incase your wondering i wondered if i had accidently install something whilst logged in as a local admin, so i did the whole install over again with the same results. so in a nut shell for some reason exchange was not recognising that i was logging in with domain user account. ok so i started over again and first promoted my 2008 server to a DC b4 i installed exchange 2007 and none of these problems exisited and all users and everything worked fine. i have no idea what is going on.. anyone?
