Exchange 2007 server coexisting in a Exchange 2003 Org Questions
Hi I have an Exchange 2003 Org with 5 exchange 2003 servers and need to upgrade one of them. The server in question is used exclusively as a Public Folder server with mail enabled PFs. I was thinking of making this server an Exchange 2007 server. I have several questions: 1. Is SP2 out yet and can I just install Exchange 2007 directly to SP2 or do I have to install SP1 and them install just SP2? 2. What roles do I need if this server is only going to to a PF server with mail enabled PFs? 3. Anyone experience any gotchas with having an Exchange 2007 coexisit in an Exchange 2003 Org. I have downloaded several Technet articles about this but would like to hear experiences from the field. 4. My plan will be to bring up this new Exch 2007 PF server then replicate the PF structure from the old Exch2003 sever to the new. Then decommishion the old Exch 2003 server. Does this sound like a good plan? Any advice on this? 5. Can Exchange 2007 SP2 be installed on a Windows 2008 R2? Thanks, TKE402

1. SP2 is out yet and you can install Exchange 2007 SP2 as one install. While you're doing that, copy the rollup hotfix package 2 (RU2) file into the Updates directory of the Exchange 2007 SP2 files and it will install that at the same time too. 2. Mailbox. But you will also need a Hub Transport in the site for mail to flow (and public folders replicate through mail), so if you haven't installed that on a separate server, you had better install it as well. While you're at it, install the Client Access role too. If your ultimate architecture calls for multiple Exchange 2007 servers, then you might want to consider at least one dual-role HT+CA server. Be aware that installing just a PF server by itself. You really ought to keep replicas of all public folders on an Exchange 2003 server until you've moved out all the mailboxes. 3. Exchange 2007 has been out a long time so gotchas are pretty well documented, and I just gave you a couple above. 4. No, for the reasons I stated above. I wouldn't rush into this until you're ready to start moving mailboxes. 5. No. Exchange 2007 is not supported on Windows 2008 R2. You will want to use Windows 2008 SP2.-- Ed Crowley MVP"There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems.".
