Hi,

I am trying to set up a retention tag to delete messages from the 'Deleted Items' folder after 7 days.

I have the tag assigned to a policy. The policy contains other tags, however they are all Personal Tags.

For my test case I am using none of the personal tags, so the only tag being applied should be the Deleted Items tag.

According to everything I have read about retention date calculations for the 'Deleted Item's folder, I am expecting that the messages should be deleted 7 days after they are moved to the Deleted Items folder, regardless of their delivery date.

For some reason I am seeing the opposite. If I delete a message from my Inbox that is 14 days old it expires immediately.

What am I missing here?

I want to avoid using managed folders and stick to retention policies if possible.

I read that article previously about how retention age is calculated.

In Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 1 (SP1), the retention age for items in the Deleted Items default folder is calculated based on the date of delivery unless the item was moved or deleted from a folder that doesn't have an inherited or implicit retention tag. Consider the following examples:

• A user receives an item in the Inbox folder on 01/26/2011. The Inbox folder doesn't have a retention tag applied, and the retention policy doesn't contain a default policy tag.
  
  1. The user soft-deletes the item on 02/27/2011. The item is moved to the Deleted Items folder, which has a retention tag configured to delete items in 30 days.
  2. The Managed Folder Assistant processes the mailbox on 03/27/2011, and determines that the item doesn't have a start date. It stamps the current date as the start date and 04/27/2011 as the expiration date.
  3. The item is deleted on 04/27/2011, which is 30 days after it was deleted or moved to the Deleted Items folder.

The problem is this isn't what I am experiencing. The message is being deleted from a folder that doesn't have a retention tag (Inbox), therefore, according to the above, the expiration date should be calculated as delete date + retention age limit. Instead it is going by delivery date.

Did you get this resolved.  I am about to start implementing deleted items retention and was curious if you were able to overcome this issue.
