Exchange 2010 Retention Policy Report
I have been tasked by my management to create a report that would indicate how many messages and their size would be deleted if a retention policy were applied to certain Exchange 2010 mailboxes. We are running Exchange 2010 SP1. I have found
a few articles on how this cannot be done like it could be in Exchange 2003 but a few articles point to this:
Exchange 2010 Mailbox retention policy versus Exchange 2003 mb retention
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvrcompliance/thread/c70238c4-2fbb-4a61-9270-167136d7f99c
The article says to use the performance monitor but it doesn't really offer step by step instructions on how you do this for a specific mailbox or a group of mailboxes. It also mentions creating retention policy with the -whatif switch but doesn't
tell you how to actually view what the retention policy would actually remove.
Can someone please offer detailed step by step instructions on how to use either method?Steve

You'd apply the retention policy to that specific mailbox or group of mailboxes.Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."

Unfortunately these articles are not very helpful. I would like some sort of step-by-step instructions on how to do this.
I have yet to see any details instructions on how to produce this report with either perfmon or with the -whatif switch using retention policies.

hi,
I carefully read this link, and have a test.
You can use the performance monitor to get a report about retention policy, but you only can get these:
Items Journaled/Items Marked as Past Retention Date/Items Moved/Items Permanently Deleted
You can right-click the performance monitor windows and then click add counters.Find the four above say, click the add button.
Then you should change the graph type. Finally you will get a windows like this.
I don't know whether it meet your goal.
If not,I think maybe a script can help you.You can ask for help here:http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/ITCG/threads/
