Exchange 2010 question..
Hello Forum, I am working with a client who has 1 office in Boston, and recently aquired another company in Connecticut. Boston has an Exchange 2007 server, connecticut was using hosted Exchange with a 3rd party. This client attaches very large (100mb+) pdf files to calendars, and shares them interoffice. I would like torecemmond that the Connecticut office scrap the hosting setup and we upgrade office to 2K10, and install an additional Exchange server in Connecticut. My question is, if we do this, will we experience performance issues with these large PDF's attached to the calendars when being shared cross site? The Boston offcie has a 20/20 internet connection, CT has a 20 down, 3-4 up, they are currently connected via vpn. Any insight would be appreciated. Chris

How is these large PDF's deliverd? is they sent as regular attachments? what is 20/20? is it MBit/Kbit? I would not try to send 100MB+ mail, it seems very unappropriate for email. IT must be another way of sharing this information. what about a simple fileshare?lasse at humandata dot se, http://anewmessagehasarrived.blogspot.com

They are not sent as an attachment, they are inserted into calendar items, the calendars are then shared to other users. So my concern is a user in Boston opening one of these calendars in Connecticut would have performance issues. The internet connection in Boston is 20 Mbit.

So calendars become like a filesserver. I would say this is a bad behavior. Bandwidth will probably be a problem depending on how often people actually look at PDF's lasse at humandata dot se, http://anewmessagehasarrived.blogspot.com

I agree that it is bad behavior, unfortunately they are set in their ways and not really open to other alternatives. I guess my question is then does Exchange 2010 offer any type of inter site replication if there were servers in both locations that would help in this situation?

Public Folder content can replicate between PF stores. Each mailbox server can hold max. one PF store. so by creating a PF store on each server, you then create folders and put data/PDF's in the folders. replication is set by default to happen every 15 minutes and can be changed per folder if needed. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb397221.aspx http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb629523.aspx lasse at humandata dot se, http://anewmessagehasarrived.blogspot.com

I don't see why the Boston users would experience any more delays than the connecticut users do. Each of them has to download the entire calendar item. I'm assumong, of course, that the connecticut users aren't using thin clients and running their client O/S on the ASP in connecticut. --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP
