Exchange 2010 server ask external contact for username and password

Hi all

I have a weird situation reported from one of my users. Everytime an external contact wants to send my user an email, he/she is asked to fill in username and password by my mailserver. I've never encountered this.

Can anyone please explain why this is happening? Why would my mailserver care about username and password for someone that is not even in my domain?

Here is the message:

Hi

Are you using outlook anywhere to connect externally or is this a pop account? if you put in domain\username and password and remember the password what happens?

Do you have basic or NTLM authentication set if you are using outlook anywhere?

Hi

this is not one of my users - this is a guy from another company that tries to send an email to one of my users and gets the message above. Why would my mailserver care about his domain credentials??

This is very strange indeed. It might be a good idea to see if the sending user has some sort of Outlook add-In that tries to find information from your Active Directory. Maybe sort of 'social connector'.  Ask them if they will disable any loaded Outlook add-ins, and then try sending another message to your user.

That would make sense - I'll try to check up on this.
