Exchange 2013 - Why does deleteing a mailbox delete the AD user?

Hi,

I've put up a fresh 2013 server installation (on 2012 server).

I want to delete a Mailbox and create a new one - but the Delete of the mailbox deletes the linked AD entry too. Is this the way its meant to work?

I tried again and the EAC mailbox delete indeed wipes out the AD user object. How do you delete just the mailbox?

Thanks.

You should choose to Disable the mailbox and not to delete. If you are looking for using EAC only, disable option should appear in the drop down in line of delete mailbox option. Just click on ... and Disable option should appear as a drop down.

Just to expand,

use "Disable" if you want to remove the mailbox but keep the AD account

use "Delete" if you want both mailbox and AD account removed.

This was the same in Exchange 2010 as well.
