Hello, I have a user that lost a e-mail and needs help to retrieve it. Here is the Environment: Exchange 2007 on Windows 2008 Standard x64 Backup Software: Symantec BE on 7/30 I did a full backup, on 8/1 and 8/2 I did differential backups of the log files. I created a RSG and restored the 7/30 database & logs as well as the 8/2 logs. That worked. I went to move the e-mails from the RSG to the users mailbox under a sub-folder, and that worked, but there are no e-mails after 7/30. I am assuming the e-mails that I need (8/1) are in the transaction logs in the RSG. How to I get those e-mails out?

2 things, 1. did you try the dumpster first? 2. when restoring the 8/2 diff, to the RSG did you mark as the last restore?

I could not check the dumpster because he is using Entourage. To answer question number two, I am not sure. Is this a function of the RSG or of the backup software? I did not know I had to mark anything.

try the dumpster in OWA; there should be an option in the backup software to tell exchange its the last of the backup set.

I only saw a few items in OWA. nothing that I was looking for. I did not see an option in Backup Exec (version 12) that says "last backup in set" I did have the job configured to commit the logs though.

Hi Robert, Please attempt the following method to recover the message from Dumpster 1. You need to use a Windows XP (at least) with Outlook 2003 (at least) installed. Configure a mail profile in Outlook to connect to the affected users mailbox in Online Mode. Connect to mailbox make sure you can connect fine. After that, close Outlook 2. Download MFCMapi tool to the Windows XP launch the tool 3. Logon by using the profile of the affected user 4. Expand Root Container and then expand IPM_SUBTREE 5. Right click the Inbox (I assume that the messages are deleted from Inbox folder) and choose Open deleted Contents Table. A new window will come up. Please give it some time to expand. 6. Please attempt to locate the message from the window or you can copy them to Inbox (or other folders), then open Outlook to locate the message you would like to recover. Mike
