We may add a server computer. Where should I install exchange serer and second should I install both the mailbox and client access on the same computer? Thanks, FR

If this is your first server, you need an Active Directory domain too. It's considered best practice to install Exchange 2013 on a different computer than the domain controller, also many people report problems when installing Exchange 2013 on a domain controller. More information: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998636.aspx If you have no experience with servers or networks, you might consider to hire a consultant to help you with this. Also you might explore the capabilities of a hosted Exchange mailbox in Office 356: http://www.microsoft.com/office365/ No need for installing servers and supports huge mailboxes, accessible from everywhere.Did my post help? Hello Frank, Both Active Directory and Exchange Server are products you run on server hardware. Let me ask you some other questions first: - What exactly do you want to achieve? - What is your budget? - Do you have any experience with server software? - Are you familiar with Microsoft Exchange, are you sure it meets your needs or did someone recommend it to you? From your questions I'm not sure you're in the right place here. Exchange is a great product for bussinesses but quite a bit knowledge and experience with computer networks is required to set it up. Maybe you need to hire someone to help you or evaluate an alternative as Office 365.Did my post help? Please use "Vote As Helpful", "Mark as answer" or "Propose as answer". Thank you!

It sounds like Office 360 is your best bet. Also, You may want to look into small business server. http://www.microsoft.com/oem/en/products/servers/pages/sbs_overview.aspx#fbid=3mZX8kgPMrJ A DC and exchange server definitely seems like overkill. SBS is better for your environment, but it requires installation and maintenance know how.

Small Business Server might be the best option for your situation, I agree. But be aware that Microsoft announced they discontinue the SBS product so you're investing in te last edition of this product. Not saying this has to be an issue, just good to know.Did my post help? So then use Windows Server 2012 Essentials (when out) on a second computer not on my CAD workstation and install Exchange Serer on Server system, correct? FR

I seriously cannot tell. There's much more involved in deploying servers than a question on what computer you should run the software, especially because you didn't mention the specifications of the computers. Also, Server 2012 Essentials is designed not to work with Exchange, you're supposed to use Exchange Online (Office 365) with that. Some pointers: SBS 2011 Documentation: http://technet.microsoft.com/library/gg490793.aspx Server 2012 Essentials: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj200119.aspx Exchange 2013: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124558.aspx Did my post help? Frank, How many workstations and users do you have now, and how many do you expect to have in the next 5 years? If you only have a few users now, then cloud email and calendars would be your best best. If you expect to grow in the next 5 years and/or AD and Exchange is something you just really want to learn, then you could then take time to setup a lab environment and experiment with AD and exchange while you use a cloud based mail system to get you by. Any PC manufactured in the last 5 years can easily be used as Domain Controller for a lab environment. I would say that before you try to learn exchange, you would want to familiarize yourself with Active Directory first. Minimum System Requirements for Server 2012 http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj134246.aspx Can you tell me exactly why you want to use Exchange and the exact features you want from it? I think its a great idea to learn by trial and error, but you want to do that in a lab setting so you dont take down any of your production environment. You could always contract somebody to do it for you, but then you may have issues supporting it down the road.

Hi Joel, I want to use a common data base, calender, scheduling etc. and hoping to set eventually set up my own cloud environment. In the short run can set up a lab to test on as suggested. Thanks, FR

Definitely give http://office365.com a look. There are various plans that you can choose from to meet your business's needs. It includes Exchange (email, calendaring/scheduling, etc) and optionally additional services like SharePoint, conferencing, Microsoft Office 2013, etc. Microsoft maintains the servers and all the technical management for you. You just manage your users. Sign up for a free trial and take a look around. With office365, you don't need to set up any servers in your company. If you do decide to deploy Exchange 2013 on your own servers, you'll need a server or two (we recommend two for fault-tolerance) for Active Directory and another for your Exchange 2013 server. While you can install Exchange 2013 on a domain controller, we recommend installing it on a dedicated server. You'll also want a backup and recovery strategy to protect against hardware failures, fires, theft, etc. And you'll want to take some training to make sure Active Directory and Exchange stay healthy. However, since this sounds like quite a small company, I really think that office365 would be the best fit.Senior Technical Writer - Exchange.
