What are you using to backup Exchange? Windows Backup or a 3rd party tool?

Yes, what are you using to attempt to backup Exchange? You need to utilize a product that has an Exchange Aware Backup AgentTroy Werelius

We use Backup Exec. In backup exec we can see the exchange stores but it always fails to back it up. i have spoke to symantic but they tell me that the server needs to be able to see the exchange stores

ok that doesn't make sense i.e. you said;
"In backup exec we can see the exchange stores but it always fails to back it up" TCW: Ok what happens during the failure, i.e. what does BE report and what do your Event Logs state before and after the backup attempt?
"I have spoke to Symantec but they tell me that the server needs to be able to see the exchange stores" please elaborate, i.e. above you say you can see the stores from within Backup Exec so???

Yeah, unfortunately you have some conflicting information here. Also, this would belong in the symantec forum as it is a problem with that product specifically. With that being said you have to have the Symantec Backup Exec Exchange agent installed, you
need to be running version 11d at a minimum and it should be fully patched. You also need to select the information stores from a specific place within backup Exec, there should be an additional 'Exchange Store' section on top of your individual server sections.
You can't directly back up the store files.
Thanks,
Jorge

Hi,
Please try to use NTbackup to check if exchange information store is working properly. If yes, the problem should be in the Symantec Backup Exec. I recommend you contact
the Symantec support for further assistance, since we are no Familiar with this produce.

Gen Lin makes an excellent point, i.e. start by
Disabling/Stopping all Backup Exec Jobs and Services so as to avoid a conflict
Next follow this article to use NTbackup to backup your Exchange 2007 Server
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998870(EXCHG.80).aspx Once you have NTbackup working you A. May have discovered why Backup Exec isn't working and B. if not you will be able to go back to Symantec and tell them that NTbackup works and BE does not so its an issue with BE, please assist, etc.

Indeed, this is a great way to isolate the problem to Symantec.
