There is a gateway which is my Verizon router which has a public IP and a private of 10.20.30.1. There is a primary domain controller that has a public IP and a private one of 10.20.30.40. The machine 10.20.30.40 is currently running exchange server. I would like to open a cloud server at my hosting provider which has a totally different public IP and load exchange server on it. I then will point my MX, CNAME and SPF to the new cloud server. I would like to be able to create direct Microsoft Exchange connections to the cloud server from machines inside my private network to the cloud with a public IP running Exchange Server. Do I need to set up some kind of VPN? Is what I want to do even possible? Thank you! I look forward to your replies!

what you are trying to do is possible, as long as you keep certain things in mind... The question would rather be: do you really want to do that? In my opinion you are far much better off with buying an Office 365 subscription, which does exactly do what you are looking for.
