Exchange Server 2007
This is my first Exchange server upgrade and I am moving from Exchange 03 to 07. The new server will have a different name then the previous. My question is once all user accounts are migrated over how do I get the client machines to see the new server? I know in outlook they point to the current server.Any help provided is greatly appreciated.

If your clients are Outlook 2003 or Outlook 2007, you won't have to do anything; when Outlook opens it will "find" the mailbox in the new server.

Well I can say from experience that Outlook 2003 even though it should find the new server seems to fail for a small percentage of people. I did a 15,000 mailbox migration from 2003 to 2007 and not all users on Outlook 2003 redireted to the new server. Outlook 2007 users should be find since OL2007 will use the autodiscover service.Just FYI. Sr. Exchange Engineer - Constellation Energy

Yes, even with different IP addresses since you should be using the Exchange server FQDN to connect the clients. As long as your internal DNS infrastructure is solid you should not have a problem.

Yep, agree with what the others have said. The functionality has been this way a long time in Exchange. Basically, once you move the mailbox using the standard tools, the first time Outlook tries to connect to the old server, the old server refers the Outlook client to the new server. The Outlook profile is that automatically updated to reflect the new server name. The key is to make sure the old server is still up and running to make the referral. For the majority of users, the move should be transparent but as stated earlier there are the odd occasions where this doesn't work for whatever reason (including occasions where users try and access Outlook too soon after the mailbox move, etc). You may have to manually tweak a few profiles but on the whole things should work automatically.Neil Hobson, Exchange MVP
