Exchange Server 2007 CCR Mailbox server disk consolidation
Greetings everyone,
I'd like to know if it is possible and advisable in my current Exchange Server 2007 SP1 with CCR technology to consolidate the following:
10x Storage Groups Replicated which each consists of:
10 Drives for each Mailbox Database - RAID 5 @ 150 GB
10 Drives for each Mailbox Transaction Log - RAID 10 @ 60 GB
into just:
1 Drives for new Mailbox Database - RAID 5 @ 2 TB GB
1 Drives for new Mailbox Transaction Log - RAID 10 @ 1 TB
The total number of mailboxes is 700+ users, so what is the implication and caveats in consolidating into the new proposed scenario ?
Any kind of advice would be gretly appreciated.
Thanks,/* Server Support Specialist */

Hi!
It all comes down to the amount of IOPS you are going to chase through these disks. Remember that having a RAID 5 array, requires you to have at least 3 drives. For RAID 10, you at least need 4...
Is it possible? Yes; but that depends on the type of hardware and the load you're going to put on it. You said 700+ mailboxes? Is that around 700 or potentially even 1000?
Also, take into account that larger databases take longer to backup/restore. Having a 2TB Database doesn't really strike me like a good idea either...
Cheers,
Michael

Michael,
Thanks for the explanation, yes you are right, I guess the reason it is better to be divided among 10 Storage Groups and each individual Drives is for the backup reason.

Hello Albert,
As Michael mentioned the answer to you question will be yes, But the important is your IOPS and disk Performance to handle the load.
you can also have a look at the Storage Requirements Calculator
