Exchange Server 5.5 services disappeared after moving server to different location.
My second Exchange Server 5.5 is the Enterprise version. My primary is Exchange Server 5.5 Standard. The second server is meant to replace the primary due to the age of the primary server. I had them both up and running together. Slowly I moved nonessential user's to the secondary server. When I felt that things were running fine I decided to move the server into the server room which meant unplugging everything and plugging everything back after it was placed in the rack. When I turned on the secondary server the cmos told me that the date needed to be corrected. Apparently the cmos battery needs to be replaced. I corrected the date and rebooted server. It booted with no errors except for the fact that the exchange services didn't load. I went into "services" to see if they loaded and noticed that they are not there. They are gone. I have a "system state backup". Do I restore it with that or is there something else that may need to be done? I don't know why this happened but it did. Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Exchange 5.5 went unsupported almost 5 years ago. Anyway... I do remember seeing something like this once and it was something about the permissions on the registry keys that define those services (HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchage___ if I recall correctly?) being overwritten or corrupted, so basically the system didn't have access to even read them. Can't remember any more specifics.

System state backup won't cut it. You need an Exchange backup. You really need a full backup of your entire server, including Exchange (online backup using NTBackup would do it). This is OT, but it sounds like it's time your company spent some some $ on its infrastructure. Unless this is a personal/lab network, you shouldn't be running Exchange 5.5 (or anything earlier than 2003, really...). Good, redundant enterprise-class hardware with a good warranty, and a supported OS & version of Exchange. A reliable, automated backup solution. If you aren't going to do this right, don't do it at all. You might look into hosted Exchange; it's often a great option for people.Lanwench ** Do not fold, spindle or mutilate.
