Exchange Server 2010, Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise, AD, Global Catalog, Main server is WS2003EE, exchange 2003 also global catalog works fine. Forest is 2003 native. I had almost completed the exchange server install on the new server, when I received an error about language (dont remember what it said exactly). I ran setup again it said exchange was installed and took me to the place where I can add or remove roles. To be on the safe side, I decided to uninstall it and attempt the install again. I did just that with the setup /mode:uninstall command - it appeared go through the remove roles and said that it uninstalled sucessfully. When I try to install again, I instantly get the error "Exchange Server Setup encountered an Error" No events are logged that I can tell. Setup.com will produce the same error message, however if I manually run lpsetupui /mode:install I get an appcrash - clicking on details reveals the following: LPSetupUI.exe has stopped working Description: Stopped working Problem signature: Problem Event Name: CLR20r3 Problem Signature 01: lpsetupui.exe Problem Signature 02: 14.0.639.21 Problem Signature 03: 4abc4f21 Problem Signature 04: LPSetupUI Problem Signature 05: 14.0.0.0 Problem Signature 06: 4abc4f21 Problem Signature 07: 1 Problem Signature 08: 10 Problem Signature 09: System.IO.FileNotFoundException OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.274.10 Locale ID: 1033 It would be nice if it mentioned what file was not found? Jonas - sorry about the delay - I tabled this for a few days but our exchange 2003 server is ready to retire soon so I will be back on it again tonight. I ran the "ServerManagerCmd –ip Exchange-Typical.xml –Restart" command and some warnings flashed momentarily on the screen after a bunch of "already installed" messages but I cannot find any log file - the c:\windows\logs\servermanager.log file does not seem to contain the same things and there is no log at %windir%\temp (the default location specified in the docs) for servermanagercmd or servermanager so I will add this to my things to do tonight - I will specify the log location in the command line and run again. I did have all the prereq's done initially but I cannot uninstall .net 3.5 from the role wizard so I was going to look at that again - I will follow your list tonight and check on all that stuff. I uninstalled everything to start fresh, however, now after I run setup.exe it gives me an error: "Setup encountered an error" I know this thread didn't complete fully. Does anyone have a fix this? I am still in the same situation - If I ever get the time, I am gonna transfer everything back to my 2003 server (now a year and a half past its retirement date) and start all over with a fresh server install as I have not been able to figure it out. If it fails again, I guess I will install 2003 server w/exchange - at least that works, what a waste of resources.

I'm also bumped into this lpsetupui.exe situation. The Exchange setup log reveals some files are missing but doesn't tell us which file(s). I haven't tried deleting anything but I did install Exchange 2007 and it worked fine. So, I uninstalled everything including AD & started again but again experienced both the lpsetupui.exe error and ExBPA says no exchange container was found. However, I'll keep trying cuz I cannot go back to 2003 or 2007 but I can go BPOS. :-(

Ok solved this problem the hard way - built another server 2K3R2 installed 32 bit exchange 2K3SP2* problem not really solved but it works fine. however... during the course of doing this I discovered a few problems in my AD, some of them related to the 2K8R2 server in question. During AD promotion that server had originally crashed BSOD due to the AMD Raid controller software not being re-entrant. I rebuilt it and ran the metadata clean up but there were still remnants in the DNS servers and AD I suspect that these remnants were contributing to the problem. Someday I will take the other two servers offline and build another to take its place and try again. Lets see.. someone up there suggested this problem might exist (ahh.. Ashwin Raj) Why does it seem that most of the solutions to sticky microsoft problems involve reinstalling software that takes two days to install?
