Exchange Server being corrupted frequently
Hi My exchange server 2003 gets corrupted every few days. It is installed on additional domain controller and I am facing this issue from last 2 months. The event log shows the following (shown today) 1. Event Id 467 2. Event Id 1025 (warning) 3. Event Id 474 4. Event Id 7 (The device \Device\HardDisk0 had a bad block) 5. Event Id 9 (The device \Device\Ide\Ideport2 did not respond within the timeout period) I have replaced the hard disk 15 days back and that too when it showed Event Id 7 (The hard disk had a bad block). Its the third time I have replaced the hard disk. Earlier the active directory got corrupted and unable to login into windows with the following error LSASS.EXE - System Error, security accounts manager initialization failed because of the following error: Directory Services cannot start. Error status 0xc00002e1. Please click OK to shutdown this system and reboot into directory services restore mode, check the event log for more detailed information. Today the exchange accounts were unable to send emails giving the error as follows Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients. Subject: test Sent: 5/6/2009 11:16 AM The following recipient(s) could not be reached: User on 5/6/2009 11:16 AM This message could not be sent. Try sending the message again later, or contact your network administrator. Error is [0x80004005-00000000-00000000]. It worked well 5-6 months when I have implemented Exchange 2003 and suddenly I am getting the above issues. Any help would be appreciated Thanks Harpreet

Harpreet,Firstly, I would check to see if there are any problems with SAN controller or any other storage controller you are using. Exchange would not damage the disks for sure. If this is physical damage on the disk then it must be because of poor quality disk or some other failures on the disk controllers. As you mentioned earlier, AD had gone corrupt few days ago. It is highly possible that AD database is not able to find the correct permissions for user accounts. Such kind of problems are temporarily due to busy directory service. Yet I would recommend you looking at application log and sytsem log on your Exchange Server and Directory Service log on your AD servers carefuly and note for the error message.Milind Naphade | MCTS:M | http://www.msexchangegeek.com

Whilst its clearly not best practice to have Exchange and AD installed on the same box, that would not be the cause of disk issues such as this. To me this suggests a hardware or driver issue. Since you have already changed the disks, it is unlikely that it is a bad disk. But you should focus your investigation around the disk subsystem and its components:- What kind of controller do you have for your disks? Are you using RAID or SATA. (you only mentioned replacing one disk so its not clear what kind ofstorage you are using)- Have you changed driver versions recently? - Are there updated drivers available for your disk controller?-If using RAID, haveyou tried replacing theRAID controller?- Have you tried replacing the cabling between the controllers and the disks?Richard
