Exchange Webmail Stops Working After WSS 3.0 Is Installed
I am not real familiar with Exchange server yet as most of our customers do not use it but we have it set up in our office. I just installed WSS 3.0 (clean install, not an upgrade from 2.0) on the Exchange server and everything appeared to be fine. I can send and recieve mail as normal. The only thing that has stopped working is the webmail function. I go to <servername>.<domainname>\exchange as I did before and I get the pop up to log in with. I put in my credentials as always and then I get a 404 error. I have admin permissions which shouldn't matter anyway. Any help you could send my way would be appreciated. TIA

WSS 3.0 and Exchange do not work together on one machine. WSS is based on the SQL database server. Both the Sql and Exchange servers use as much physical memory they can to service requests efficiently and sooner or later conflicts will arise resulting in crashes. Both productsneed dedicatedmachines to work well (or work at all). You could try to deinstall WSS, go into the IIS manager and try toput the originalExchange settings back. This is very difficult to do, even for an expert. It involves application pools, ASP.NET versions, default web sites. and what not. Buteven if you pull off this featyour Exchange installationwill benot quite 'Out of the box' : expect problems with updates etc.It will cost you hours and hours and hours of trying and probably not succeeding. What I would do is to start afresh. Use Exmerge to backup the mailboxes -reinstall Windows - reinstall the active directory - reinstall Exchange - configure your user accounts - restore mailboxes using Exmerge. A couple of hours work at the most (depending on the numberof users you have). Leave it alone forever afterand it wil work fine, providing you do some reading on how to maintain Exchange. A word of warning about WSS 3.0. It is most certainly a brilliant product. But like Exchange it isvery easy to install but not so veryeasy to maintain. You will need more than a little expertise to run it succesfully.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823265/en-usis related to WSS 2.0. WSS 3.0 is a different beast altogether. Don't even try it.
