Exchange migration help
Hello, I'm not sure how we do this part of our migration, however we have 3 domains and we are going to be migrating into 1 new 2008R2 forest/domain. Once the new domain is setup I will be dropping PC's and servers from the domains and adding to the new domain and use the ADMT tool for user accounts, however we have 3 Exchange servers from the 3 domains (2003 and 2 x 2007) to move into this domain, but how can 3 Exchange servers work in one domain and what about linking the user accounts, I just don't know where to start with migrating Exchnage, has anyone done this before? What is good is that we will eventually have one GAL, but I can just use the Quest tool to sync GALS anyway. Thanks in advance

To clarify you are migration to new Forest? Not sure about your question "how can 3 Exchange servers work in one domain and what about linking the user accounts" Exchange can work with multiple domains in the forest as long as the domain has been prepped. Linking user accounts is only relevant in resource forest scenarios which you don't seem to be doing. 1. Create bi-directional trust for both domains 2. Install ADMT, password export server, admt service account, make sure the sevice account is in local admin for all computers in order for profile and computer migration. (use the ADMT guide for more details) 3. You need to prevision the accounts using prepare.moverequest 4. Move the mailbox using new-moverequest 5. Migrate the AD account using ADMT 6. Migrate the user's computer and profile (same time) using ADMT You can also do different order step 5 then 3 then 4 it just depends on your preference and what issues you encounter during your testing that will likely determine which way you choose.James Chong MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com

Sorry for the confusion. We have 3 domains as our company took over 2 other companies. We have 2-way domain trusts from us to them, but we now what want to merg them into our domain so we end up with one domain. I've read up parts on using ADMT to migrate accounts across as they have some big file servers with lots of file and folder permissions, then there is Exchange. We have Exchnage 2007 and the 2 other companies have 2003 and 2007. Can me merge their mailboxes into our system or leave the Exhcnage servers as they are and get them to use their new migrated AD accounts?

I see you want to collapse your domains. Yes you can use ADMT to migrate their accounts which will carry over SID history so they can still access their old file servers after they get migrated. Then you need to perform cross forest mailbox moves. Yes you also have the option of leaving their mailboxes in place but using the new migrated accounts in your domain using linked accounts. Once you migrate the account, you disable the source account in the old domain then re-connect to the migrated account.
