Exchange not sending external emails internally
Hello I really need some help,
We have a really old computer server, its runs windows 2000 server sp4, it has exchange on.
For years 9+ its been fine we dont touch it other than to add new users. Just recently it stopped routing external emails to the local network, but we can still send emails internally and externally, we can also receive internal emails.
Just out of the blue it stopped doing it, and I'm no expert on exchange and routing etc, I rebooted the server loads of times but with no luck. I can see that the connector is working fine as it pulls down the external emails but then I guess disappears!
Luckily our website host has a feature which saves all emails on an external exchange login so we can still get our emails but its far from ideal as we use outlook for everything else except emails at the moment!
Can anyone spare some time to try and help me figure it out?

Hello,
I don't have enough information about how your Exchange is configured but based on the fact that you say that your external mails and viewable through an outside host, my guess is that your Exchange server is using POP3 connection manager to retrieve e-mails
from a foreign server.
Check that the POP3 connection manager service is running in Exchange under connectors.

Hi Naki,
It would appear the pop3 connection manager service is working fine as I see all the emails disapear from the external host at the correct intervals of the pop3 connector (15mins).
SMTP connector seems to be working fine as we can send emails from our outlook to any external email addresses.
That link you posted has helped me understand more about this system though, and with some good links so i`ll keep trying different things out!

Hi Gavin,
This company has a server machine which has windows 2000 server installed with exchange. It is the machine connected to the internet which is shared between our 5 computers. It has all our shared documents on and is generally our central point
for everything.
We have our internet connection with orange(uk) broadband with a email address lets say, company@orange.co.uk. Our website name is hosted by active24. When people email us they would type marc@company.co.uk this would goto active24 which forwards
all emails received to company@orange.co.uk, our server then pulls all the emails down from company@orange.co.uk and delivers them to the users mailbox.
We can access our emails by logging into the control panel at active24 and also from orange. I can clearly see the emails are being forwarded fine to orange and I can see them being collected by our server every 15mins, after that its a mystery as
to where they go!
Just one day when we all came into work none of us where getting any emails anymore, nothing has changed with our hosts, and I didnt change anything on our server!

Hi Marc,
What version of your exchange server, you could check the smtp log on your local exchange server, your could refer to:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/155455
You could find the email flow.
What client software do you use to receive the email in your local, outlook or other third party software?
You could check the the email through OWA, and check that.
Check the exchange server work well, for example: send email local, to internet, or use smtp command to test it.

Sorry guys, no luck so far.

No we dont use any third party stuff, only windows 2000 server, exchange 5.5 I think, and outlook on the client pcs.
My boss is starting to get funny about it now and looks like were going to have to shell out for an expert to come out and have a look. Even he said he couldn't gaurentee it since Microsoft doesn't support windows 2000 anymore!
On a side note, I keep getting these popups on the screen, they say:
Message from Server to Localhost date & time
Event log failure
So i have to keep just closing the box but they keep coming up! I couldnt see anything wrong with the event log but hey ho!

Hi Marc,
I would say sorry about your issue, per your description, you are using exchange 5.5.
And since January 11, 2006 has brought a close to Support for Exchange Server 5.5 as part of the Microsoft Lifecycle Policy

I suggest you upgrading exchange to new version with higher version and new functionality
