Exchange online-defrag queries
Hi We are running Exchange 2003 SP2. We have three Storage Groups and three mailbox stores per Storage group. I am checking the Event Log, and notice that there are Event ID 70x events relating to the starting and completing of the online defrag jobs on Exchange. I had a couple of questions: 1. If I want to filter only by, say, Event ID's 700 - 704...what's the best way to do this? I know I can filter by just one Event ID, but not sure how to filter by a short range? 2. Should each store complete its online defrag each night? If not, what could be the reason for the non-completion? 3. I notice that on say Monday night, the databases in one SG will complete the defrag, then the next night, the database in another SG will complete, is this normal? Or should they all complete every night? 4. What is the effect of the online defrag not completing?5. Are there any Event ID's I should be looking for in relation to online-defrag not completing?

1.) I don't think so 2.) Yes each store should complete each night if possible, if you kick off a backup will stop it. 3.) There is a schedule, right click on the message store, click the DB tab, then check the maintenance schedule. 4.) This marks page as free to be overwritten if it doesn't complete you'll never reuse open space and the files will continue to grow. 5.) http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996226(EXCHG.65).aspx Mark Morowczynski|MCT| MCSE 2003:Messaging, Security|MCITP:ES, SA,EA|MCTS:Windows Mobile Admin|Security+|http://almostdailytech.com

Hi MarkThanks...So, I should be seeing Event ID's that the Online Defrag has completed for all Mailbox Stores each night....if the Online defrag does *not* complete, would there be any Event ID's written? Do you know what they would be?I don't see any Events stating that the Online defrag has even started for some Stores last night (but there are a couple of night before). The Maintenance schedule is set for 2 hours every night. I *do* see messages (Event ID 707) stating that Database Zeroing has started/finished...is there a connection? I can't find much on Database Zeroing on the internet?

Try increasing maintenance schedule window and keep it away from the shceduled backup window, monitor for couple of days since changing window will affect from next schedule cycle. 1. You may try getting event id from 700-704 with powershell by setting multiple conditions with OR operator...
