Exchange resending old message over and over
Have Exchange Server 2003 and Outlook 2007 on clients. One person is getting the same message over and over - several copies every second or two. I did read about similar cases and tried using Mfcmapi.exe to open up things; found nothing in any of the SMTP mailbox in the TempTables. We get our external mail from each PC into Outlook; Exchange doesn't go to the outside world to fetch the mail. But this is an e-mail message that previously came in from the outside. Exchange is used for internal mail and manages the PSTs each person has and the Public folders. Somehow this message is being sent over and over by Exchange (it is not coming from the outside mail server, we've checked that. I've stopped and started the Exchange services.Norm D

I have no known solutions for this but I can suggest some potential workarounds. First, look at the SMTP protocol logs to ensure that the message isn't looping outside. I know you said you checked, but I suggest you just verify it. Does this happen only when connected with Outlook, or does the message keep appearing while the user is logged off? You can look in OWA to see if the messages keep coming in. If they're appearing only when Outlook is connected, you might try disabling cached mode, and if the problems tops, deleting and creating a new OST file, and, if that fails, creating a new profile. If the problem occurs while Outlook is disconnected, you might try moving the mailbox to a different database. That might repair or delete the corrupt message (if it is corrupt). I don't know that I know enough to do this! The message is dates 10/5/2010, over and over. I used Mfcmapi.exe a couple of ways. I deleted the TempTable as mentioned in Method 1 of article 906557. I also opened up the mailbox of the person with the problem, and there in the Inbox was the message! But when I selected it and clicked delete, it didn't go away; multiple times (yes I refreshed). I tried setting it "marked for deletion," too. After restarting services, I opened his Outlook ... and the same message is still streaming in. It wasn't at first but started up after a short time.Norm D

If you can't follow my recommendations, you might consider opening a support ticket with Microsoft and they can hold your hand through the process or even fix it for you.Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."

Hi Norm, You said you "get our external mail from each PC into Outlook; Exchange doesn't go to the outside world to fetch the mail." Outlook connects to ISP(POP3) to fetch the mail and store it in the pst file? And how Exchange is used to manage pst files? Ed also provided some ways to troubleshoot the issue. Following up on this matter, The PST files for each user are in a folder on another server, with a folder for each user. Exchange does NOT go out to our outside mail server (i.e., from our ISP) and get mail for users; that happens when a user open Outlook, on a timer once Outlook is open or whenever [s]he clicks send/receive. When we send an e-mail we can choose which account ("Microsoft Exchange" or our e-mail address, in the Account buton under the Send button on Outlook's e-mail form). If sent by default (Exchange) it seemingly either handles it internally for another user with an Exchange account in our system) or Exchange sends it outside. If I choose to send via my e-mail address it goes out to the outside server and then comes back in, bypassing Exchange. Exchange also handles all the Public folders. As I mentioned, when I opened up the user with the problem via Mfcmapi.exe I could see this problem message but i was not able to delete it even though I selected the message and specifically tried to delete it. It acts like the data store is messed up but Exchange Manager says they're (Public and Private) are okay. Is theere a "file check" utility one can run to check the Exchange stores and clean them up? Like FSCK or CHKDSK but for Exchange? I know this doesns't answer all the questions, but it is what I know at this time. Thank you, Ed and Frank for your guidance, past, present and future.Norm D
