Exchange server 2003, Exmerge deteled e-mails, but the database isn't getting smaller.
Hello, I used Exmerge to delete e-mails and exported to pst files. The e-mails i deleted from the users mailboxes was e-mail of 2008. Some mailboxes were even half of the size after Exmerging. After that i used eseutil /d to defrag the database, but the Exchange database did not get any smaller. How can i delete the deleted items, i cannot do that within Outlook. First, it are 20 mailboxes and second, there are no items to recover in Outlook, so, i think also not to purge. The Exchange database is getting to big, so i want to have it smaller. It is Exchange server 2003 SP2. Thank you for your help. Marty

Do a filter for Event ID 1221, how much free space does it say you have after it finishes the online defrag? Did you let it run the online defrag before using the eseutil /d command? Marty Deleting email may remove them from the user's view, but if you haveDeleted Item Retention enabled on the database those messages stilloccupy space. You can shorten the retention period, or have the users use the "Tools| Recover Deleted Items" menu and remove (i.e. permanently delete) themessages from there. If you have the permanent deletion of messages prohibited until youperfrom a successful backup of the database, don't forget to make thatbackup!---Rich MatheisenMCSE+I, Exchange MVP--- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

Hey Mark, Yesterday, i did the deletion of 2008 and the eseutil /d thing. Today it the application event 1221 says: The database "First Storage Group\Mailbox Store (MAILSERVER)" has 17 megabytes of free space after online defragmentation has terminated. The database "First Storage Group\Public Folder Store (MAILSERVER)" has 1724 megabytes of free space after online defragmentation has terminated. I'll do now the Rich 1 day trick. Let you know tomorrow. Marty
