No, frontend/backend topology is an option in the exchange. We can use one single exchange server for users the small environment with OWA function
As for the firewall, we can use the windows firewall on the windows server, Microsoft solution (ISA), or other 3rd party firewall to protect the exchange

HI Zohid, It is absolutely not required. You can accomplish your need with one Exchange Server and your users can still access their mailbox any where from world. Provided that you are properly hosting your outlook web access from internet. I am attaching below link which will give an idea how to setup single SBS 2OO3 server, Just go through it and implement it in LAB and then you can plan in production http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Installing-and-Configuring-SBS2003.html

You may consult the web hosting company, see if they can provide any backup resolution for users data

Hi, I have setup a lab the scenrio is as follows:A existing server is operating currently with AD installed, a new installed exchange 2003 server is added to this domain. emails were configured, mailbox created and the users were able to acess the email on the LAN. Then exchange server gave up some problem and we reloaded the o/s and MS exchange. when this server is added to the domain again with the same name as previous server, any new users created are unable to use exchange. the users created before with the first xchange server are working fine except for the new users created after the server reformatted. can you please help me on this.
