Exchange won't send and OWA works sometimes...
Greetings - I am before a beginner relative to Exchange. I've a Small Business Server 08 w/Exchange 07. Outside of wierd things that happen - it works great. I've two issues that continue to plague me:#1. Email won't deliver: *****************************************************************************************Delivery has failed to these recipients or distribution lists: Person 1Microsoft Exchange has been trying to deliver this message without success and has stopped trying. Please try sending this message again, or provide the following diagnostic text to your system administrator. I'd like to know how to look up information regarding this error message so that I may learn how to diagnose & would appreciate any insight about what this message says.#2. The 'remote.myserver.com' application works great - sometimes. For whatever reason, occassionally I'll go to a browser (IE8), key in 'remote.myserver.com' and get no connection - I'll not have made any changes to my exchange server beforehand. Not understanding what to examine for diagnosis - I'll go to the server and restart all exchange services. Sometimes this works, sometimes it does not. Please help me understand how to diagnose this issue.Much thx to all,Rick Pelham

Hi Rick, To answer your first question.. You need to first check the response code in NDR. The first line says "#550 4.4.7 QUEUE.Expired; message expired ##." which means the didn't make it to go out of the domain yet and kept trying to make connection with Recipient's Server. Below is the link of most common NDR responses. #550 4.4.7 QUEUE.Expired; message expired ## http://www.computerperformance.co.uk/exchange2007/exchange2007_ndr.htm In your case it may be a misconfiguration of send connectors. Can you please us about your Topology. Regarding your Second query, i was not able to understand what is that application. Are you talking about Outlook Web Access (Web version of outlook to access mailbox)? Please explain. Thanks. Vishal Ramnani | MCITP - Exchange 2007 | MCSE Messaging | MCTS - Win 2008 Config

Vishal - Thanks for the guidance...Issue 1: will work on this today/this evening and relay the results to you...Issue 2: With SBS 2008/Exchange 2007 I have the option to key in 'remote.yourais.com' or remote.yourais.com/owa' via browser. -->If I key in remote.yourais.com - I am presented with a screen that offers access to a) OWA; b) Connect to computer c) connect to the server. -->If I key in remote.yourais.com/owa I am presented with a login for OWA only.Until recently I had no issues accessing either - this weekend and today I can access neither. I can't think of a thing that I modified within Exchange but must have - I don't believe in coincidence...I am at a loss to determine what caused the problem - not even confident I am able to determine where in Exchange to look to see why I have this error.Rick

HiRick, Regarding the first issue, from the NDR message, the original message stuck on the Exchange server and expired based on you configuration. We are not able to get further information why the message stuck on the Exchange Server based on the NDR message. To check the issue, you need to run get-queue |fl command or Queue Viewer tool when the message stuck on the Exchange Server and check the LastError of the queue which the message stuck in to check why the message cannot be delivered. How to Use the Queue Viewer http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124789.aspx Regarding the OWA access issue, please let me know if you access OWA (https:// remote.yourais.com/owa) on the SBS server directly, whether you are able to access OWA successfully. Note: I assume tha the remote.yourais.com is able to resolve to correct IP address. If the issue persists when accessing OWA on the SBS server, please let me know the error you received. Please also check IIS log on the SBS server and post related error here. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mike Shen TechNet Subscriber Support in forum If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tngfb@microsoft.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Hi Rick,Any update regarding the issue? Thanks,Mike

Hey Mike - Have been fortunate to have landed three projects keeping me wrapped up in the money making world...finally...1. In the Ex Mgmt Shell:[PS] C:\Windows\System32>get-queue | flIdentity : AIS-SERVER\SubmissionDeliveryType : UndefinedNextHopDomain : SubmissionNextHopConnector : 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000Status : ReadyMessageCount : 0LastError :LastRetryTime :NextRetryTime :IsValid : TrueObjectState : Unchanged2. In the Queue Viewer (AIS-Server.aisinc.local): (Don't know what criteria I should have used in the filters...)A. Queues Tab - Last Error: Nothing Listed. I changed the criteria to "Is Present" and "Is Not Present"B. Messages Tab - Last Error: Nothing Listed. I changed the criteria to "Is Present" and "Is Not Present"3. I am unable to access OWA on the server directly using https:// remote.yourais.com/owa (although I could until sometime early last week - in fact all seemed to be working just fine)4. remote.yourais.com is able to resolve to correct IP addressPS C:\Users\rpelham.a1130n> ping remote.yourais.com Pinging remote.yourais.com [192.168.3.2] with 32 bytes oReply from 192.168.3.2: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128Reply from 192.168.3.2: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128Reply from 192.168.3.2: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128Reply from 192.168.3.2: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128 Ping statistics for 192.168.3.2: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),5. IIS LogI went to c:\inetpub\logs\logfiles in search of IIS logs (that should tell you something...). There is a tremendous amount of files in the folders below. Thedaily log filesrange in size from 4000kb to 24500kb (Is that normal?) I can zip them and forward them if you like... a. W3SVC1 (12/2/09) b. W3SVC2(11/16/09) c. W3SVC3(112509) d. W3SVC137222213 (12/2/09) e. W3SVC15122514815 (12/2/09) f. W3SVC1899589246 (12/2/09)6. Other info:Iloaded a utility from Solar Winds "Exchange Monitor." It displays:"The Exchange Server WMI counters could not be collected. Verify that Exchange is installed on the server" a. Exchange System - Running b. MSExchangeES - Not Found c. IMAP4Svc - Not Found d. Exchange Information - Running e. MSExchangeMTA - Not Found f. RESvc - Not Foundg. SMTPSVC - Not FoundThat doesn'tlook good to me...although I can only intuit what itindicates...I fear that I have serioulsy screwed up my Exchange functionality - and frankly, as I think back on things I may have done - I'm not sure what I did to create this morass. I know that I was trying tofigure out how I could get my desktop Outlook client to receive POP3 addresses so that I could receive the email for: accounting@yourais.com; service@yourais.com; info@yourais.com; and a couple others. My Outlook client was setupwithrspelham@yourais.com and it connected to Exchange just fine. As it currently stands - Outlook connects to Exchange - but I get no email from Exchange and am unable to send email viaExchange. I there an opportunity to restore all Exchange to default settings and begin anew? Is there the need for that?I appreciate your patience - I know how frustrated I get when a novice tries to bit off more that he/she can chew within my industry....Rick

Hey Mike (2)...I believe that I have two issues now: First is that my DNS is screwed up significantly & second is that my POP3 settings & as Vishal stated earlier my Send Connectors are now putzed as well. Hi Rick, Thanks for your response and information. Firstly, please understand that the forum is for Exchange related issues. For some other issues such as DNS, you need to submit to SBS newsgroup to get more appropriate support. Based on your description, I think that you we have three Exchange related issues currently: 1. The message could be delivered 2. The OWA does not work 3. You have some POP3 problems when receiving email. In order to avoid confusion, I recommend that we focus on the problems one by one. Let use focus on the mail delivery problem firstly Regarding the message delivery problem, would you please let me know? 1. Whether the issue only occurs when sending to external recipient? If you send a message to yourself, whether does the issue persist? 2. From your get-queue result, you only have submission queue currently and no message stuck in the queue. Would you please send a test message to AOL again. After a moment, please run the get-queue |fl again and post related information here. 3. Please check Application Log on the Exchange Server, whether is any Error Event received regarding Mail Flow? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mike Shen TechNet Subscriber Support in forum If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tngfb@microsoft.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Thank you Mike...I'll get the info you asked for andI will move my DNS issues to the SBS newsgroup. My motivation in giving you the info I gathered was to (hopefully) make sure you had a clear picture of the overall problem.I'll send the info later this evening (Georgia time...)Rick
