Exhchange 2003 Setting incoming mail size restrictions by domain ?
Hi Guys As part of a request by my managment they would like to open the door up for certain domains to be able to send through files sizes bigger than 10+ meg. Against my wishes I have decided to humour them and investigate it further. I havent been able to find out wether excahnge has the ability to allow a few domains to have a different size restriction/ bypass default restriction. While still restricting other domains with the 10 meg default limit. (located under message delivery properties defaults tab). Does anyone know if this is possible at all. Any third party apps that i may be able to use? Thanks for your help in advance.

Could you be more clear with the origin of the "Larger Attachments"? Do you have multiple Authoritative Domains (Internal) on your Exchange server & would like for some of these to be able to send out larger sized attacment to the public? or Would you like incoming email from Certain Public Domains to be permitted to submit larger sized messages to your Exchange Organization? The first scenario is pretty easily achieved through one of many methods: Multiple SMTP Connectors for particular Domains or Multiple SMTP Virtual Servers for those Domains or SMTPT Gateway / Smart Host with this capability. In the second scenario, this becomes a little more difficult. One thing you could possibly do is add an additional SMTP Virtual Server onto your Exchange Server with a larger message size limit, assign a different IP / Port to it then on the firewall create a secondary NAT which points to this connector but using a new public IP. Instruct the sending domains to setup a smarthost ip for your Domain pointing to the new SMTP Virtual Server. Of Course, in either scenario, you would need to lift the Global Default Message Size Restriction of 10MB and then set Different Message Size Limits on the different SMTP Virtual Servers. Unfortunately, without the Co-operation of the Sending Domain Admins it will NOT be easy to implement this split size limit scenario for incoming email. Perhapssome SMTP Gateways out there will be able to assist with this level of functionality, a Google will yield some results I am sure. This definitely is not an irregular requirement / wish list item.

Hi Johan It was the second scenario you have outlined. I am currently looking into the possiblity of the virtual smtp server, as mentioned though without the cooperation of the other admins involved it may turn out to be a very difficult excercise. Thanks very much for your help, i now have a direction to head in. Brent
