File names too long. Can't delete

I'm having an issue deleting files from a Windows Server share.

The files in question are actual email items, moved from within MS Outlook to the file system. They have incredibly long file names (actions which users were encouraged not to do).

When I try delete them i get this error:

"Destination Path Too Long:  The file name(s) would be too long for the destination folder.  You can shorten the file name and try again, or try a location that has a shorter path. "

This occurs whether i hit delete or shift - delete.

I have tried a number of the suggestions on technet. All to no avail.

Does anyone have experience of deleting email items on a file system with very long names?

Rename the folders while starting at the root, once renamed, you'll be able to delete the folder tree.

rename them all to example: 1

Merge them all together then use shift Delete

I cannot rename. I have no rename option as they are email items, not regular files.

Hi,

Were these email items saved as .msg files on the Windows Server share?

Please check if the following KB article is helpful, it described the different causes of this problem. See:

Hi Steve,

They were saved as .msg files onto a NetApp CIFS Volume/Share.

None of the suggestions in the KB article you provided works for this issue.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks.
