I was working on a new document when suddenly the Word icon just started flashing orange in the bottom bar completely making it not possible to create a document. How do I resolve this?

Based on your description, did you get the result as shown in the following figure?

If yes, it seems to be the result of a recent Microsoft update that affects people with Word and Excel Starter editions.
