Get Table of contents from numbered headings

Sorry for posting here, I know this is not the really right site for posting my question

BUT I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO frustrated on Ms Word 2013 !!!!!!!!!!!!!

My problem is with creating "numbered headings" and a "Table of Contents".

On one side, I have no numbers on my headings, but when I add them, I cannot create a table of contents.

and so on ........    The internet is full of such problems

I am wondering, I am not a beginner at computers. I am a professional SW developer for many years. How can such a tool as MS Word be so complicated?

Ok, any site, where is a nice and really easy to understand tutorial, which does not consume 5 hours?  :-)

Hi Somigur

Mmmm. My sympathies, and I wish I could provide you with a useful answer, right away, but...

Unfortunately you don't give us enough background information to be able to understand where you're running into problems! Such as "how" it's not working for you and the steps to reproduce the problem?

But, as you said, unless you're trying to do this using code, this isn't the best place to ask :-) I know a couple of people who work intensively with TOCs, Headings and numbering and, since they don't write code, they don't hang out here. You're more likely to find them on the Answers site or, possibly, on the IT Pro TechNet site. I can move your question to the latter, if you'd like, but they would also need additional information...

As Cindy has suggested, this is really more appropriate in the Microsoft Community (http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/word?tab=Threads).

However, since you are looking for tutorials on creating numbered headings and a TOC, have a look at these articles:

How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Word 2007 and Word 2010
http://shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/numbering20072010.html

How to create a table of contents in Microsoft Word
http://shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/tableofcontents.html

Both articles apply to Word 2013 as well.

Thank you for your answers - very helpfull.

But to be honest, if such simple basic taks are such complicated as written in these links, than MS Word is propably no longer the tool for creation of documents for everybody (MVP's excepted ) as it was in the last decade(s). During my professional carreer as sw-developer, I created propably seveal ten-thousands of ms-word documents/pages by doing some simple clicking (with previous versions of word)

I also asked my wife, she's secratary at an university, and ms-word is her daily business. She was not able to explain me a solution. She simply does not use this feature in her job and if really needed, she uses other chances/tools.

Ok, enough. Thank you for your kind support (and your links). I will move to another forum if I have more concerns
