Global Address List not Updating
Ok I know what you are thinking, "wow haven't heard this before"....but I think we may be original here... Background.. Exchange 2007 - two servers. One that is an edge server and the other has everything else... AD 2003 on R2 server Recently decommissioned last exchange 2000 server so we only have exchange 2007 servers outlook 2007 in cached mode. Problem.. Anytime we create a new mailbox in exchange 2007 the user will not show up in the GAL (same if we try it in ADU&C first). it appears that the showinaddressfield does not populate. attempted solutions.. after extensive searches on yours and mine friend google here is what we tried... 1. manually updating the offline address book via powerscript and the console while turning on advanced logging for this. Logging told us everything is dandy. 2 Manually sync Outlook tells us everything is perfect with the sync logs...sigh... 2. if we manually update the showinaddressfield it does work but obviously that isn't a good way to go. 3. create new offline address book and try the above..didn't work. 4. open owa and try outlook in non-cached mode..didn't work. Really wish we had even an error to go on but have none so we are stumped...any idea? Thanks in advance for your help..have a good day.

This is happening to us also. We are in test mode for exchange 2007 sp1. If I turn off cache mode it works but don't want to have to do this. Please help out asap..anyone! thanks.

We're having the same problem - Exchange 2007 servers and we're moving from an Exchange 2003 server... currently have users on both... Problem arises when the new user / mailbox is created on the 2007 server. The user shows up in the OWA address book but not in the Global Address Book of Outlook 2007. I could swear this used to work before we upgraded to Exchange 2007 SP1 (from regular Exchange 2007) We have a couple of Windows 2000 domain controllers we haven't decomisioned yet, I see that when moving mailboxes in SP1 I now have to manually designate the Windows 2003 DC's to use for the move where was pre SP1 it was smart enough to pick a comaptible DC, not sure if it's related but it's the only other 'problem' noticed after the SP1 upgrade.

Try this: Go to Exchange Management Console/Organization Configuration/Mailbox/Offline Address Book create a " Default Offline Address Book" if you already have an entry for your default OAB, right click/properties/Address List make sure the "Include Default Global Address List" is ticked on distribution Tab, makes sure "Outlook 2003 SP2 or later (Version 4)"is ticked for Outlook 2007 Clients also make sure "Enable Web-based distibution" is ticked and preferably a distibution point (OAB Web site) added for each CAS server. Then , back on "Organization Configuration/Mailbox/Offline Address Book" right click and Update Hope This helps Ian

The offline oab needs to be regenerated. and then outlook cached mode needs to download a new copy of it. you can do either of these steps manually, or wait for the schedule to kick it off. I have the update schedule set to update twice a day (6am and noon) but it's gone many days without upsating. As the check marks, all the distrubtion ones were checked excapt "Enable Web-based distribution" is greyed out / not checkable... What I did end up doing to force the update on some machines was to delete the cached version of the offline address book by deleting all the .oab files in the Outlook Data directory... Once deleted Outlook 2007 downloaded the new/correct copy of the OAB- though it was just a temporary fix as it still doesn't update itself regularly.

I'm in the exact same situation and the proposed resolution above I have already tried.The problem is, we've already decommitioned our exchange 2003 server, and I think that there may be some records pointing to the old server. Actually, I tried to update the default global address list in the exchange shell, but it failed because it cannot retrieve information from the old server.here's the error that shows when I try to update the address list:Warning:Failed to update recipient "charmetours.local/CHARMETOURS/Distribution groups/helpdesk". Try this, Go to exchange management shell and try to update GAL via command. Update-GlobalAddressList -Identity "Default Global Address List" This will update your online Global Address List. Or else EMC then go to Mail Box setting and update Offline Address Book manually.

Tried your command Vijay_som and got a bunch of errors. I have the exact same problem as everyone else. It would seem if you use NON-cached mode and see what you expect, and in cached mode you have these issues, it's clearly the OLAB (offline address book), and it's generation. You mentioned you had 2 2007 servers. Are these in a CCR cluster by chance? I found that when in a failed over state to the passive node, the OAB failed to generate. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd285503(EXCHG.80).aspx. I used this method to reassign but it automatically reverted back to the "normally" active node. We simply made sure the Active node was always up and running so this problem went away. But I would seriously spend time learning how OAB is generated (when it does work) and verify your CAS and Mailbox server configs are consistent. Exchange BPA would be another idea to check!

"Then , back on "Organization Configuration/Mailbox/Offline Address Book" right click and Update" This actually helped me diagnose my issue... the "System Attendant" service was not running. Started and the offline address book works correctly now.
