Got this question from the AD team
Hi all, We are running Exchange 2003 Ent. SP2 in a clustered environment on Windows 2003 R2 Ent. SP2 and the DC/GC's are running on the same OS. Can anyone answer this question with regards to the effect on Exchange from a DC/GC running Windows 2008 perspective? The question are as follows Question #1 from AD TeamAre there any know issues with an Exchange 2003Front end or backend against DCs that could be in any of the following configurations: 1. Clarification - DC/GC are running Windows 2003 R2 Ent. SP2 on separate machines (not on same machine as Exchange). The way I posted the question may have been read differently without this clarification.

More resources: Overview of operating system and Active Directory requirements for Exchange Server 2003 Description of the Microsoft server applications that are supported on Windows Server 2008 Thanks for the link James. Exchange 2003 isn't supported (although does appear to work) at Windows 2008 R2Forest Functional level. So to the OP, decide if you want supportability. Which would actually state that Question 1 Point 3 is actually a NO if you go to R2.Hope this helps,Oliver Oliver Moazzezi | Exchange MVP, MCSA:M, BA (Hons) Anim | http://www.exchange2007.com http://www.exchange2010.com http://www.cobweb.com |

However, Exchange Server 2003 SP2 is supported against Windows Server 2008 Active Directory servers.

Hi,Yeah I saw that but knew I had seen an supportability issue - which is with R2 and ammended as necessary. I know the OP didn't state this but I thought it best to add.OliverOliver Moazzezi | Exchange MVP, MCSA:M, BA (Hons) Anim | http://www.exchange2007.com http://www.exchange2010.com http://www.cobweb.com |

Please note the new support matrix:http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2009/11/30/453327.aspxExchange 2003 SP2 will now be supported against writeable Windows Server 2008 R2 Active Directory Servers. Additionally, with the General Availability of Exchange Server 2010, and those looking to standardize on Windows Server 2008 R2 we have enhanced the supportability of forest and domain functional levels up to Windows Server 2008 R2. This change is effective immediately on Exchange 2003 SP2.
