Help with conditional formatting

Hi,

First, I have trawled and tried many 'solutions' but to no avail.

Package:Excel 2010

Situation: Col I, user manually selects from a drop down Yes or No to confirm a task has been completed. This list that drives the Yes or No is in another worksheet within the workbook.

The column is formatted to General

Requirement: On selecting Yes or No the result displayed should be an Icon, green circle for Yes, red diamond for No

Observations: I understand that if I were to use a numerical value then this is straight forward, and I have used that for the Priority column where the user selects from a list of 1,2 or 3. I'm using Yes or No as the options for Completed column rather than numbers for user friendliness - I don't want them getting confused over 'does a 1 mean Yes or No'

I think the challenge is that the value the conditional format is calling is text and I don't know how to resolve this.  Any help appreciated.  Any offers of help appreciated.

Thx :)

You cannot do this in the cell with the dropdown itself. Icon sets only work with numeric values.

You could use an auxiliary column with a formula. In the screenshot below, cell H2 contains the formula

=IF(I2="Yes",2,IF(I2="No",0,1))

Conditional formatting with an icon set has been applied to column H, and to hide the result of the formula, I ticked the check box "Show icon only".

Thanks Hans, so I suppose the answer to my question is it cant be done.  I don't see the point in the user selecting yes or no from a dropdown and displaying an icon next to it, the yes or no already answers the question.  I just wanted it to be a bit more appealing.

Thank you for your effort though, very much appreciated.
