Hide exchange users from Global address list not available after SP1 in Ex 2010
It seems that some users marked as "Hide From Address Lists" = true now after SP1 are again visible in the GAL. Sometimes only in the OutLook 2010 client, sometimes in OWA client, sometimes in both clients. We tried to set the property msExchHideFromAddressList=true again, we cleared the ShowInAddressBook property. After that we give in the Exchange Powershell Update-GlobalAddressList "Default Global Address List". I am rather sure that this is behavior is new in SP1. Anyway at this moment we can change the parameter with EMC, just enable Hide from Exchange address list. The property changed from false to true when we get the property with the Exchange Command shell but in the client the user is still visible. In our organization users changes are very often, students leave and when they come back and they get an new account. Just one account is current. The older accounts are disabled in the AD, we wont to hide them for a while in Exchange before we disable or delete the exchange account. Thanks in advanced for any help to solve this problem. Hi Albrecht, Can you just create some 3-4 test mailbox and hide it from GAL, Give it some time to repliacate and then check it in outlook. You can immediate check it in OWA and update. SP1 requires the installation of 4-5 hotfixes, depending on the operating system, Did you install required hotfix before SP1 2010 ? We have > 6000 mailboxes. A lot of these mailboxes must be marked invisible in our Global Address List for a while, so there is no need to make testusers. We checked again in EMC: “Hide from Exchange Address lists” is marked. Checked with Active Directory Users and Computer with the advanced features view and msExchHideFromAddressList=true ; account is disabled in the AD. Two entries in property showInAddressbook are removed. (CN=All Users,…. and CN=Default Global Address lists, ….) User is still visible in the address book though a search in the outlook client. Also in name completion when we make a new email in the outlook 2010 client. But user is NOT visible in OWA. In spite of the fact that our Outlook clients are not working in caching mode I deleted the content of subdir: C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook. After that action the “invisible” user is deleted from both OWA addressbook as Outlook Addressbook as well. So it seems that this problem is solved, but can anybody explain how addressbooks behave in Exchange (Outlook and OWA)? Aalbrecht

I glad to hear that the issue is resolved after clearing the following folder: C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook. Please understand that all the *.oab (Offline Address Book) files are saved in the above folder. This issue can occur if the local OAB file is not updated correctly when modifying the relevant settings on Exchange 2010 server. After clearing the folder, new OAB files will be created and new settings are applied. Hence, the invisible user is hidden successfully. For more information about Address Book, I would like to share you the following articles: How to deploy the .oab files Understanding Address Lists Understanding Offline Address Books Thanks.
