How do you make the name of an attachment appear in the email thread beyond the first email?

Hi,

I'm trying to figure out how to have the name of an attachment appear in the email thread after the first email has been sent. Here's the situation. I'll draft a document and email to our attorney for his review. The first email I send him shows the attachment and its name. However, when he writes back to me with comments, his email does not show the name of the attachment. Sometimes there will be multiple emails back and forth between us.  When it comes time for me to save our conversation, I only want to save the last email because it contains all of our conversations. However, the last email does not show the actual name of the document that we were talking about.  Is there a way to make this appear in the email thread?

Thanks so much.

Hi

Are you working for a law firm or are you a home user discussing something with your lawyer?

If so, i suppose you guys are using a document management system? Some use share point and some use filesite/worksite?

Remember when lawyers respond and save correspondence they file these emails and the document management system generate a reference/document/email number that relate to the specific subject/matter/case for tracking and searching purposes and thus then change the subject/email thread etc.

Because any corresponsdense or conversation after the initial email was filed will be automatically filed to the matter/case in the correct location using that document management reference/email number.

Also, can you confirm that this only happens with lawyers or does this happen to any other person you email, like your buddies that use normal email accounts like gmail?

Let me know if your situation is different.

Thanks.

Hi,

I work for a small non-profit. We use Microsoft Outlook and I use it in its basic form. We don't use share point or any of the others you mentioned. I don't even know what they are.  We aren't that sophisticated.  As for your question, it happens with anyone I work with, not just attorneys. For our own organization's record keeping, it would be nice for the thread to show the name of the original attachment so we could trace back to that document and know exactly which one we were talking about.

Thanks for any help.

Anne,

If you click once on the parent email and then click once on the white triangle to the left of the envelope, it will expand the email chain but still somewhat summarized.  Now, if you click the white triangle again, it will expand to show all emails including the emails with the attachments.  The trick is to click on it twice but click slowly as a double click of the white triangle will just open up the email message and you still can't get to the attachment.

I hope that helps.

Thanks, Curt. I don't have a white triangle to the left of the envelope. It's just a blank space. And I'm not certain how what you're describing would solve my problem.

I tried to insert two images showing my problem, but a window came up that said, "Body text cannot contain images or links until we are able to verify your account." I clicked OK and nothing happened. Does anyone know how to get my account verified so I can include two images?

Anne,

What version of Outlook are you using?  How are you connected to your email server?

We use Microsoft Outlook 2010.  We use Gmail for our email (some deal we have for being a non-profit), but I still use Outlook as my interface. Does that answer your question?

Thanks again for your help.

Anne,

In Conversation view when in Outlook you should have a triangle (to the left of the conversation group) you can click on to expand the conversion, this then shows a nested list of all the message and paper clips for the ones that have attachments.

Click on the View tab, and click on the Reset View button, this should return the view to the default and you should see the little triangles to the left of the conversations in the list of messages.  You can then use those to toggle the summary of all the messages in the conversation open and closed.

If that still does not work, you might think about just using your Gmail account in the Chrome browser, this way you get a lot of the gmail features, plus you can do that from any PC, not just the one with your Outlook installed.  Just a thought for you, or you can repair Outlook.

Repair Outlook 2010

  1. Open up the Control Panel on your PC (and show All Control Panel items, if necessary) and click on Programs and Features.
  2. Find Office 2010 in the list and highlight it.
  3. Click Change.
  4. Select Repair and Continue then follow the prompts
  5. After the repair is finished, reboot.

Hopefully one of those takes care of it for you.

Good morning. I was finally able to get my account verified and so hopefully this means I can post these two images that may better explain my problem. The first image shows an email I sent to myself and it includes the actual name of the attachment. The second email, my reply to myself, does not include the name of the attachment. See below. I'm trying to figure out how to have subsequent emails show the name of the attachment in the first email.

Anne,

The images you posted are from Printed emails.  Outlook will not show the original attachment in future messages unless it is also attached to those messages.

If you logon to your Gmail account through the browser and print that same message, it will print with the attachment shown as you want.

That at least gives you a work around to get what you want.
