It is the same key in my experience. The key only controls the version of Exchange deployed - so there is one key for Standard and one key for Enterprise edition. You do not have to enter a key during installation though - Exchange comes up in evaluation mode which is good for 120 days, which should be enough time to get your licences purchased. I am not sure you can change from an MSDN key to a VL key after the fact.
