Visio 2007 Professional contains a set of Grid table shapes that allow you to adjust the row and column count. To access from the stencil menu path: Business -> Charts and Graphs -> Charting Shapes.
If that's also in 2010, you may be good to go.
Insert an Excel Worksheet
Use: Insert \ Object \ Microsoft Excel Worksheet
This is the only way to do this without it being a kludge
Those tables from charting shapes are horrible.
Too bad Visio doesn't have a problem table create function, its not always handy to import from excel. If you have access to a Mac with omnigraffle has a nice table function though haha ;)
Anyway I prefer it this way, to go Data -> Link Data to Shapes, this way have more control about what you import from the excel sheet and what not and easier to resize.
Yes, the Grid Control provided in "Charting Shapes" isn't very usable given it doesn't seem to resize properly when you adjust the number of rows/columns.
I was hoping I could paste from Excel, but this doesn't seem to work.
Any other ideas?
Edit: I used Insert/Object Microsoft Excel Worksheet and it sort of works.

To insert a table in Visio Basic:
Kinda roundabout method, but it works.

Hello Peter,
Regarding the Grid shape resizing problem - I wrote a blog post about this a while ago and it includes a download shape that solves the problem:

I've just been having the same problem and tried all the suggestions below but wasn't happy with the results, so I kept trying and found something that works for me:

This works great in any Visio version
1. Open Power Point with a blank slide.
2. Copy Excel Grids / Cells
3. Paste in Power point slide . It creates a Table.
4. Copy the Power point Table
5. Paste in VISIO.... WOW....!!
