The KB provided by ahuibers is quite useful to recover lost documents, we can follow the methods in the KB to have a try.

For a corrupted file, we can open and repair it in Word, let's take Word 2013 for example:

Open Word, click FILE tab -> Open -> Browse to the file location -> Select the file -> Choose "Open and Repair" under the Open dropbox. Then the document will be opened and repaired, check the result.

By the way, the methods work for most scenarios, but under some circumstances, it is still possible that the documents can't be recovered or repaired.

It could be Word or even Windows that is having the problem. Before you start trying to restore a backup or repair a file, try opening other documents. Try opening your "corrupt" document from another computer. Also you can try to make a copy of corrupted files.
