IISReset breaks Outlook Anywhere
We are using the Exchange Hub Transport role on our Mailbox server which is running Windows Server 2008. When we perform an IISReset we often (not always) lose Exchange connectivity via Outlook Anywhere (RPC over HTTP). All other connections work including RPC (for local network users) and Outlook Web Access (OWA). We're sometimes able to resume service by restarting the Application Pool associated with the RPC virtual directory. Othertimes a subsequent IISReset will resolve the issue. These fixes are intermittent, though; I'd prefer something more reliable for those times when an IISReset is required (we try to avoid this but obviously it's not always possible).Have other people had this issue? If so, what is your work-around?Jeremy

Hi jeremy, here's what i'd suggest.look at iis logs and http err logs (both located in c:\windows\system32\logfiles) and check the error codes when this happens.also, look at app/sys logs and try running an exbpa on the server and see if it shows anything interesting.Thanksna

Old post by my search brought me here as I'm having the same issue. Windows 2008 SBS Exchange 2007 SP3. Any chance this has been looked at by MS or a resolution is available? I don't do an IISReset often but I always forget to Outlook Anywhere
when I do.

It's always recommended to use iisreset /noforce otherwise you're abruptly terminating services and connections. Test the noforce and see if it makes a difference.James Chong MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com

I will test it. However, when I ran the Sharepoint Products and Technology Configuration Wizard recently it must have ran IISReset because Outlook Anywhere stopped working until I ran IISReset again. I don't expect to run that
wizard again but would like to know I don't have to worry about OA when IISReset is ran via any Windows console interface.

This sounds familiar to me.
I wrote about the problems IIS Reset causes on Windows 2003 here:
When IISReset Kills

Have to admit that, I no longer use IISReset. So I did not verify if there were any developments in Windows 2008. However the symptoms you are describing
are very similar to those experienced in Windows 2003…
