IIS Exchange Application Pool Not Starting
Hi all, My colleague has posted this issue here: http://forums.iis.net/p/1172275/1959626.aspx However has had no joy with the IIS forums, and as the issue we're having is possibly one of integration I'm posting here too. The problem first presented as all shared public calendar (not users account) in Outlook showed a number of appointments, but when you opened it, the calendar had no entries. The cause of which was that though IIS Admin was running, all the application pools were stopped, and the websites not running. When attempting to start any application pool (including newly created empty ones) IIS Admin throws a "The service did not start in a timely fashion" message. When consulting the dependencies of IIS Admin, all services are started according to the services manager. When consulting the logs, there are no error messages relating to failed attempts of services starting, nor any warnings to the effect that IIS is playing up. There are no security logs of failed login attempts, and all processes are running with the same access rights as they've always run when it did work. A few server restarts and windows updates later the issue remains. I've used NetStat and a little utility to identify open ports, and there are no other programs that are binding the common ports requires, 80, 443 etc. I've had a look at the IIS website logs (under windows->system32), with all the browser interactions in, and nothing in there proves suggestive. Are there any other places where logs are kept that might be suggestive of what's actually happened? I'm at the point of trying to migrate ExchAdmin and other Web Service aspects of Exchange to another IIS server, or even migrating the whole setup to a different server, both of which seem painful and a large hammer to take. If you are having problems with IIS , it is better to reinstall IIS and Exchange .. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320202

Thanks for the link. That's my inclination, but it's a production server, and finding the downtime is hard. I think if I was going to do this, I'd start again with the OS as well, as I don't understand what the underlying cause is. Suggestions Welcome.. I forgot to mention it's Windows Server Std 2003. IIS 6.0, and fully updated Exchange Std 2003. Thanks. Alastair

Hi, I do not think you would require Reinstallion of OS ... EXchange 2003 is more simpler. Just need to remove IIS , reinstall and run Exchange setup again .. all the settings are in AD .. so reinstalling Exchange server would be fine . I think the kb is very helpful

Hi, Most of the Applicaiton pool problem are caused by the DLL mismatch or the ISAPI filters. 1. Does this problem ocurrs after installing some hotfix or updates such as hotfix 908521 and .NET 3.5 SP1 ? If yes, you can first uninstall these updates and see if the issue persists. 2. Backup IIS configuration and then remove the ISAP filters except: Exchange OWA Cookie Authentication ISAPI Filter and Exchange ActiveSync ISPAI Filter. Run IISreset to restart all IIS services. For sake of completeness, I'm assuming you mean in your second point.
