Trouoble is that immediately it was installed ISS service stopped and will not restart (v6.0). Have triend uninstalling KB835734 but ISS still not starting. Reports 1053 when try to start from the Services panel. Can any one help or can I provide more info so someone can help. Many thanks. David

That is a POP3 update, nothing to do with Exchange, so I am surprised it was giving problems. Is Exchange fully patched? Exchange 2003 SP2? If so, have you run Microsoft Update against the system (this is different to Windows Update in that it covers all products). How was the update you mention installed? Manual download or Automatic Updates? Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP Blog | Exchange Resources | In the UK? Hire Me.

Hi Simon Exchange is SP1, a small number of minor updates and a new security update are being applied while I'm typing this but this is all usually kept up to date auto. The hotfix was manually downloaded (save as) as there was a security message blocking just clicking on the link, then installed from desktop just fine (or so it seemed). There are quite a few forum threads about the update I used and I'm pretty convinced it was the right thing to do. Will SP2 solve the problem do you think? I was actioning the update at the time via a VPN which went offline as soon as the update was installed, so the service failure (or some sort of failure) was definitely due to the install. When I got the the actual machine this morning went through a restart but to no avail. Interestingly I can use the VPN now to access the machine but still the service won't start, error message 1053. Any idea what else I can try or whether SP2 will resolve? David

Here's an interesting development ... one of the optional updates offered up by Ms Update was for the servers network adaptor, but dated back in 2004. Anyway I let all the updates run as I thought nothing to lose but as this update was being installed I lost the VPN again and cannot get it back. Is there some sort of clash going on between the card software, the KB835734 update, and the ISS ? I wish I know more about this stuff! Any clues (for when I van get to the physical machine now I guess!) David

Exchange service packs aren't presented by Windows/Microsoft Update. Therefore I would strongly advise going to Exchange 2003 SP2, then running Microsoft Update to get the post SP2 updates. In the main, drivers from Microsoft Update for 2003 era products are usually left best alone - you should be able to roll it back. The 2008 era driers are much better. Is this a branded machine? HP, Dell etc? If so, you should use their drivers for the chassis. I suspect that as the hotfix you have posted about is newer than SP2, it might have caused a problem. Get SP2 on to the server. I presume that you are using the POP3 connector in SBS 2003? If not then you didn't even need that update. I would also recommend that updating the server that you run the SBS BPA - which is a free download from Microsoft and correct anything it flags. This will tell you more about your SBS server than I can do so remotely, and potentially flag some issues with it. Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP Blog | Exchange Resources | In the UK? Hire Me.

Hi Simon Upgrading to SP2 has done the trick. BPA has flagged up issues with the network card which I will investigate but everyhting is working just fine at the moment. I wonder still why the MS hotfix screwed things up but at least it's all OK now. Thank you for your help very much appreciated. Case closed! David Head Chief Executive RP Fighting Blindness
