Internal email routing in Exchange 2007/2010
Hey all, I was wondering about internal email routing in Exchange 2007/2010. I know that in Exchange 2000/2003 internal email routing is based and the LegacyExchangeDN and I was wondering if it is still the same in exchange 2007/2010 and if not what is it based on ? SMTP addresses ? I am unable to find any resource online tackling this issue. Thanks for your time

In 2007 (and I assume 2010) all addresses are resolved to the Primary SMTP address, and then routed based on that.

Thank you for confirming this, Do you have any link or white paper to some "official" documentation about this ? if internal routing is based on SMTP addresses like, I thought it would be, what is the purpose of the "Alias/mailNickname" in 2007/2010?

Hi, from technet article:For the EX e-mail address type, the LDAP filter is based on the recipient legacyExchangeDN Active Directory attribute or the recipient proxyAddresses Active Directory attribute. The legacyExchangeDN Active Directory attribute takes precedence. For all other e-mail addresses types, the recipient proxyAddresses Active Directory attribute is used as the LDAP filter.http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb430743.aspxFrank Wang
