Is SBS 2008 dependant on Exchange Server?
Our company purchased Small Business Server 2008, does Exchange Server 2007 come Bundled and Licensed with it?If not, do we really need it for our users. I was trying to remove exchange and noticed my users disappearing. So,is SBS 2008 dependant on Exchange 2007?

SBS 2003 allowed you to install the OS and THEN install Exchange. SBS 2008 doesnt give you control of the computer until it is finished with the entire setup routine, which includes Exchange 2007 installation and configuration. While I would imagine you could hack away at it and remove Exchange one way or another, I'm sure this would be unsupported and you might have other undesired consequences. What are you trying to accomplish? Even if you dont use Exchange for email it can happily sit dormant while you take advantage of the other SBS features. Thanks for answering my question on license issue mike. I am trying to keep Exchange dormant but, I keep getting errors in my event log that I would like to clear. Error 0x80040111 event 8197 and OALGEN event 9371. Thanks for any suggestions.

If youre not going to use Exchange then you can safely ignore OALGEN errors. Mike Crowley A+, Network+, Security+, MCT, MCSE, MCTS, MCITP: Enterprise Administrator / Messaging Administrator

SBS 2008 is not dependent on Exchange 2007 and you can safely uninstall it but I find it a waste of a great technology your users could be taking advantage of.MVP Exchange Server
