JOURNALING MAILBOXES
I have some questions about securing journaling mailboxes in Exchange 2007. Should a journaling mailbox be tied to a disabled Windows account? Is there any reason to leave the account enabled? Obviously I don't want anyone logging in as the journaling user. If I need to give someone access to a journaling mailbox, is there a way to do it so that they have read-only access? We obviously cannot write this to worm media, so I need to know the best approach for securing this data to meet various compliance requirements. Lastly, if I only want to keep mail in the journaling mailbox for 3 years, is it as simple as just applying a mailbox policy to the journaling mailbox's inbox? Thank you.

How big do you think this mailbox will get retaining three years' worth of data? -- Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems." . Roughly 90GB at current rates, but I expect that ti increase as emails get bigger and bigger by the day.

That's an awfully large mailbox. You're going to have a very hard time making use of it. You might want to rethink that strategy. -- Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems." . If you have any suggestions, I'm open, but with the amount of mail we receive, that's just what it's going to be.

You might want to look into a third-party archiving solution. Some of them take the data out of the journaling mailbox and put it in their own system, others work differently. -- Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems." .
