I originally posted this in Microsoft Answers, and was directed to post it here by support engineer Vijay B: The installation of KB2586448 has disabled certain functionality in Outlook Web Access For Exchange Server 2003. One can do the initial click on an inbox item or right-click on a folder, but attempting to do anything with a subsequent menu gives you a hand, not even a cursor, and the menu box hangs until you go to another folder. This makes it impossible to empty the Deleted Items folder (unless one does it manually), nor can one mark mail items as read or unread. I first encountered this on my laptop, running Windows XP SP3 and IE 8.0.6001.18702. The same thing happened on my netbook, running Windows 7 Professional and IE IE 9.0.8112.16421 (Update Versions 9.0.3 [KB2586448]). I also replicated the problem on a desktop, same configuration as my laptop. I have reported this to Microsoft via phone, but I haven't seen any answers or workarounds forthcoming. I'm frantically trying to get my hands on a copy of Outlook 2003 to interact with my (remote) office's Exchange Server ... because my copy of Outlook 2000 cannot connect, and I cannot continue to work like this. Can you try it on a new xp box before and after installing KB2586448 and see if this cause the same problem?

This was tested on the Windows 7 / IE 9 machine, and removing the update removed the problem. (That's how I determined which of the nine updates caused it.) I have no reason to believe it would behave differently on XP / IE 8.

I have no available new XP box on which to test. This occurred on two separate XP machines running IE 8 with all the latest updates.

If you know for sure it's that KB, then you will need to test that update on a clean Win XP machine and test. If this still fails then there may be an issue with the update. I would test against the supported IE for OWA 2003.Sukh

Thank you, Fiona. I have passed this on to my company's IT manager, and am still trying to locate a standalone copy of Outlook 2003 as a workaround.
