Load Balancer Unexpected Behavior
client is trying to load balance 2 2010 SP3 RU1 servers with a Kemp LM 2200. Using Outlook 2007 SP3. During testing, when an exchange server reboots, whether it has public folders on it or not (only one server does), outlook will drop the connection, and then prompt the user for credentials. Is this the expected

Good Evening,

Use cookies with OWA. This requires that you decrypt the payload and either re-encrypt it and pass it on to Exchange with HTTPS or don't re-encrypt and pass it on as HTTP. In the latter case, you'll have to remove the SSL requirement on Exchange.

You could configure OWA with client-based IP prpersistenceOn KEMP devices, this is the easiest approach. However, you should not do this if you have a NAT'ed internal network.

Add the following words in the config of load balancer VIP:

port ssl keep-alive

Exchange 2010 forums are http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?forum=exchangesvravailabilityandisasterrecoverylegacy

It is not expected behavior.

What are the roles on the Server you're rebooting? Do you have a CAS Array? Is the RpcClientAccessServer field on the databases set to the Cas Array?

I'll move the question, but yes, I do have a CAS Array and all that. 2 multi-role servers. Yes, I checked the RPC field on the databases.

Hi,

How many roles on the Exchange Server which you reboot, CAS/HUB/MBX?

When the server is down, can you try rebuilding the Outlook profile so that it can connect to the other CAS and works properly?

Please double check your HNLB settings.

Thanks,

Yes this is expected for Outlook 2007

To work around this issue, follow these steps to enable the DisableTransientFailureAuthPrompts registry entry:

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. Copy and then paste (or type) the following command in the Open box, and then press Enter:
         regedit
  3. Locate and then click the following registry subkey. (Create the RPC subkey if it does not already exist):

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\RPC

    or

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\RPC

  4. On the Edit menu, click New, and then click DWORD Value.
  5. Type DisableTransientFailureAuthPrompts, and then press Enter.
  6. Right-click DisableTransientFailureAuthPrompts, and then click Modify.
  7. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
  8. Exit Registry Editor.

This is a known limitation in Office Outlook 2007.

There are network conditions that can also result in a similar symptom. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
