Location of outbound mail folder in Exchange 2003
Can anyone tell me the location of the folder where outbound mail is stored before being sent on? I mean the location in the disk structure rather than in ESM. I'd like to know because a client would like to monitor whether his outbound mail queue is growing to identify problems and would like to do it outside of Exchange itself (I already know I can monitor the queue from within Exchange System Monitor so please don't reply suggesting this - thanks.)

You can see mail in queue directory which nothing but same you see in ESM. I don't think we can see mail queue in any other folder. Anil

What version of Exchange?I won't suggest ESM, but I will suggest Windows Performance Monitor, which has counters to tell you exactly what the state of the queues are.In Exchange 2000 and 2003 there's a disk location for mail that is in the smtp delivery queue, but that's no the only place that mail in transit may be sitting at rest.In Exchange 2007 and 2010 the mail sits in the transport service ESE database, not in a folder on disk as individual message files, so you would be required to use performance counters or powershell scripts to check the status of the queues.

You "roll your own" using WMI.http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2006/10/31/430060.aspxhttp://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa143751(EXCHG.65).aspxhttp://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa143720(EXCHG.65).aspxhttp://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms876478(EXCHG.65).aspxIf you have a single server, outbound email isn't kept in a filesystem fiolder, it's kept in the Information Store (i.e. the sender'sdatabase). The only mail you'll see in the Queue folder is that whichwas sent by SMTP clients to your server.---Rich MatheisenMCSE+I, Exchange MVP---

Thanks for all your answers guys. I pretty much figured there was no folder in the file system after sitting monitoring a few whilst sending outbound mail. WMI it is then!
