Lost Public Folders Tree
I am running Exchange Server 2003 on Server 2003, and the Public Folders "Tree" seems to have disappeared. I can't re-add it because it already exists. Since this happened, I can't access the public folders in Outlook or OWA, and I can't mount the Public Folder Store. When I try to mount it, I get error c1041722, which associated with permissions, but all the correct permissions are set. I believe this problem to be associated with the "Lost Public Folders Tree" since the store can't find the path to what it should be connected to. How can I get this tree back? I have tried to restore the public folder from the "ntbackup" utility, along with many other things with no success. Any help will be greatly appreciated!Thank you for your time,madguitar1

Hi Madguitar1,
From your description, I guess that the Public Folders Tree disappeared from ESM->AG->Folders. In addition, the Public Folder store associated with the Public Folders Tree cannot be mounted with the error c1041722. If I misunderstood your means, please let me know.
Madguitar1, I suggest that we focus on the Public Folders Tree miss issue firstly. I would like to explain that the Public Folders Tree is an Object in AD. Thus, please check whether the Object exists in AD and you have sufficient permission to access it:
Note: The actually content of Public Folders Hierarchies are stored in the Public Folder store.
1. Run Adsiedit.msc
2. Navigate to the following Object Container:
Configuration->Services->Microsoft Exchange->Organization Name->Administrator Groups->AG Name->Folder Hierarchies
3. Please check whether the Public Folders object exists on the right panel and you have sufficient permission to access it.
You can refer to Method 2 in the following KB to check the permission of the Public Folders tree object:
Event ID 9519 when you try to mount a public folder store:

Mike,Thank you for your reply. You hit the nail directly on the head! I have used ADSIedit and verified that the the Public Folders Tree is there. The Public Folders Store is also where it should be. However, the "class" is no longer configured for either one. When I try to go to properties, I get an invalid pathname was passed error. I can edit everything else except those two objects. There was no information in these folders, as we are just now wanting to use them, so anything that I can do to get them back will be fine. All that being said...I can't delete them and re-add them, I can't go to properties, and they appear in AD when using ADSIedit but not in ESM. I should definately have permissions though. I really appreciate any help.madguitar1

Hi Madguitar1,
After further research, I still think that the issue is related to the permission setting. Thus, would you please run the following command and post the result here?
DSACLS "CN=Public Folders,CN=Folder Hierarchies,CN=Administrative_Group_Name,CN=Administrative Groups,CN=ORGANIZATION_Name,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=Root_DOMAIN" >c:\PfPerms.txt
Thanks,
Mike

Mike,My problem is now solved. You were right...it was permissions related. I used AD sites & services, navigated to the folder tree (which had no class assigned to it), right-clicked and went to permissions, then added the permissions (in which there were none). The public folders tree reappeared in ESM. The folder store was a bit more tricky, but was fixed in much the same way. I created a DWORD under ExAdmin "ShowSecurityPage" and gave it a decimal value of 1. At that point, I added the proper security for "First Organization", "First Administrative Group", and "First Storage Group", making sure everything matched. The Store then reappeared in the ESM. Seeing as there was no data in this database beforehand, I just let it create a new database for me when I mounted it. Everything seems to be working great now!Thank you for your help!madguitar1

Thanks, that worked perfectly 4 me!
4all : But don't forget to enable "Show Services Node" in the view Tab!
Otherwise you cannot navigate to the objects and you'll see nothing!
