MS Word 2013 letter spacing anomaly

Intermittently the letter spacing in a document will push the letters together of a word or two.  It doesnt happen all of the time and it doesnt happen to the entire document.  I may be working in a document for 10 minutes or so and all of a sudden I will notice that some of the text within the document is affected.  Any suggestions?

Hi,

Did this issue occur with the special or every Word file?

If this issue occurs with the special file, do you mind send us a sample file via Email(ibsofc@microsoft.com)? I'd like to test it.

If this issue occurs with all the file, it may be caused by some factors. Please try the below methods:

  • Disable add-ins.
  • Rename the Normal.dot or Normal.dotm global template file

If you have any update, please feel free let me know.

The user is running on a 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Session, Office 2013. According to the link you provided (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921541), the "Normal.dotm" file should be located "ren %userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates\Normal.dotm OldNormal.dotm, however the file mapping does not match up.  Where should I be able to find the "Normal.dotm" file?

Hi Mark Tacheny,

We can find the "Normal.dotm" with following path:

C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates

Disabling add-ins seemed to work for a while.  But eventually it started happening again.  Renaming the normal.dotm file had no affect.  We are still intermittently having the issue.

Hi,

According to your description, the user seems has some third party add-ins. I recommend you start Word with safe mode and run for some period of time. If this issue disappear, please try to remove the add-ins one by one, and we may confirm the cause.

Thanks

Safe Mode may not be a good option.  This is a remote desktop user on a 2012 r2 system.  There are more then just this user using the system.  The other users don't have or at least don't complain about the issue.

it's strange, why not remove the add-ins?

We disabled "Shockwave Flash Object" add-on.  That seemed to clear the problem.  Interesting though when we disabled the "Send to OneNote" and "OneNote Linked Notes" add-ons the problem came back.  So obviously we enabled those two add-ons and it seems to be working fine ever since.  Just giving it a few days before declaring victory.

Hi Mark,

This issue is most probably caused by the add-in conflicting. I recommend you update add-ins to latest version and check if this issue disappear.

Thanks
