Mail disappear from inboxes
Hello! I have: - Exchange 2007 x64 Standard, 8.1 build 240.6 - BlackBerry Professional Software v4.1.4.3 - MS Forefront Security 10 SP1 Problem: mail desappear frominboxes once in 1-2weeks. Not all mail, but messages older than 1 month (approximately). This looks like some of archiving starts periodically, but I dont have it. Messages vanish completelly - they arent moven to Deleted folder. Users doesnt synchronize boxes via POP3. I dont see anything suspicious in Event log. I restore messages from backup, but this doesnt solve problem. Is there any way to trace whats going on? I.e. which service deletes mail. Extended logging, some sort of triggers? I cant find anything similiar in google. Help please Regards

Do you have Mailbox Manager policies enabled? The behavior you explained seems to be some policy maintainance removing data as configured. Do you ahve any third party applications interacting with exchange? i.e any archiving product?

I am not sure about BlackBerry software although if I have to guess, it should not delete mails from mailbox. Have you tried enableing dumpster on all folders to find mails that went missing? This can confirm if the mails are really deleted or if it is an issue with views. Here is the link that you can use to enable dumpster for all folders. After enabling this, you can recover deleted items from any folder and not just the deleted items. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886205

The article on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886205suggests to change key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\Client\Options but Exchange 2007 doesnt have it... How it can be enabled in 2007? I use cmdlet Get-MailboxFolderStatistics to check counts of messages in folders. No signs of missing items. Ive found cmdlet Get-EventLogLevel which shows what I have "Lowest" log level for all categories of events. Maybe I can heighten some of them, to see whats happening? But there is so many of them...

Sorry, this is not a server optoin. This is key for machine running outlook client. I wanted you to check this on one of the clients to see what is happening. If folderstats confirm that the mails are actually removed from the mailbox, we should explore other avenues. Let me research other options we can try to troubleshoot. I will post when I have more information.

Thanks Bhargav Shukla Currently I cant invent anything except to raise log level and see what happens. I`ve setlog level to High and made a script to monitor amount of messages in Inbox of oneof the users whos mail dissapears.Script counts inbox items every minute and if >3 items vanishes per minute- it sends me an email with timestamp. So I will know exactly in which minute this happens and will inspect logs.

It happened again (110 messages vanished from Inbox in 1 minute)and ive got notification with precisetimewhen it happened. So Ive checked event logs, Forefront Security logs, Blackberry logs - nothing unusual, no clues...

What are your current settings in Outlook for autoarchive? Just to confirm, how many mailboxes are affected?
September 22nd, 2008 10:39pm

Autoarchive is disabled in Outlook. All mailboxes affected (5 of 6 active), except mine (my mail was lost only once - 2 months ago). And I cant find any difference in configuration. Some of other usersdont use Outlook at all - they prefer web interface, some uses Mac`s. And I use Outlook, Thunderbird, web interface. I also checked for hidden rules via MFCMapi - cant see any.

I recommended some time ago to check Deleted Items (dumpsteralwayson registry on outlook client), were you able to do that? Did you find messages in "recover deleted items"? Can you please download and run MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.EXE on your exchange server? You can download the file from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=CEBF3C7C-7CA5-408F-88B7-F9C79B7306C0&displaylang=en. Will you be able to provide me download location for the cab file created by tool? I can take a look and see if there are any obvious events that can point me to the issue.

And theirdate and time of deletion exactly matches the the time which was reported by monitoring. Can you please tell me at what time did you get notification that the emails were deleted? It can help me narrow down to the importantevents. Please mention the timezone the server is configured to use. Also please let me know what is the username and email address of the affected user.

I did take a look at the logs and all I can find is administrator account and system accessing the mailbox stores. Do you have any scheduled tasks that are invoked from powershell? I do see powershell access exchange on regular bases. If this isn't the case, I suggest you open a case with PSS to troubleshoot further.

I have a home computer connected to gmail. I was using Outlook 2007 for some time (couple of years) with a few major problems. And just risently, may be last Monday, I noticed that when I exit oulook, all Inbox my messages are disappearing. On several occasions I ran Help - Office Diagnostics. Are there any know problems with this feature? Sam. P.S. Could this be cased by any Outlook settings? I noticed that "read" e-mail also disappeared when I traversed from inbox to other folder. When returning to Inbox Read mail is missing, unread mail stayed intact. Are there any takers? Sam.
