Mailbox Migration Exchange 2010 to 2013 very slow

I'm experiencing very slow migrations:  A 700MB mailbox took 4 hours.  I Have 3,800 mailboxes to move, at this rate it will take two years to complete going 24/7/365.

Does anyone have any ideas?  This is running from a 2010 DAG to a 2013 DAG, all servers have latest updates, service packs, etc.  DAG status is all healthy.

2010 = Update Rollup 8-v2 for Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 3 (KB2986475) 14.3.224.2
2013 = Exchange Server 2013 Cumulative Update 7 (KB3040856) 15.0.1044.29

What can be done to speed this up?

Hi Tony,

Please refer to the following methods and check if any helps:

1. Check out if there is an content index error on your mailbox database copies;

Try to disable the index and check you can see the difference

Get-MailboxDatabaseCopyStatus  | ft name, status, contentindexstate,contentindexerrormessage

Set-MailboxDatabase DB -IndexEnabled:$False

2. Check out the NIC card drivers holds the latest drivers. Perfrom a test on copying 100 MB file from the source server to the target server. Try to the check its speed.  Verify with the hardware vendor is there any latest drivers got released for the server hardware.

3. Disable the TCP Chimney

Check the TCP Chimney is Enabled and supported

Netsh int tcp show global

Netsh int tcp show chimneystats (Check the Supp value, if its No that means TCP Chimney is not supported or not enabled on the Network card driver settings, otherwise youd see Yes with some values on TMax and PMax)

To disable TCP Chimney and RSS:

netsh int tcp set global chimney=disabled
netsh int tcp set global rss=disabled

In addition, here is a script written by Exchange Team which can help you analyze the performance of a batch of move requests to identify reasons for slower performance: http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2014/03/24/mailbox-migration-performance-analysis.aspx

If single mailbox movement is fine and you are facing problems in multiple mailbox migration then modify the value in the MSExchangeMailboxReplication.exe.config file  from

c:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15\Bin\MSExchangeMailboxReplication.exe.config

For more tips to increase the speed of your mailbox migration, refer this blog: https://rajisubramanian.wordpress.com/2014/05/30/slow-mailbox-movement-on-exchange-2013-sp1-mailbox-migration/

I hope this will work for you!!!!

But as you have to migrate 3,800 mailboxes, it would take a lot of time and efforts. So, if you want to complete the migration in quick times (in hours), then I would recommend you to go for a professional Migration software  like Stellar Mailbox Extractor for Exchange Server  which can help you to migrate 3800 mailboxes in quick time.

Hello Blake,

Good information.  I tried disabling the index and no difference.  All replication is reporting good.  Transferring large files is no issue. 120 MB/+.  Single mailbox move is not fine, seems to be capped at 2MB/min.

When I run the Get-MoveRequestStatistics, none of the moves exceed 2 MB/min.  Is there a setting somewhere where that can be increased?

Thanks, Tony

Seems that the move is idle nearly 93% of the time....

Did you get anywhere on this?  I have the same problem.  IdleDuration is extremely high on mine it's up over 80%, only on mine the HighAvailabilityStalls is also very high at almost %50.

In my experience the sure way to speed up Exchange 2013 mailbox migrations is to disable MRS throttling.  In the registry go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\MSExchange ResourceHealth" and edit the MRS DWORD value from 1 to 0.  Then restart the Exchange Mailbox Replication Service.  Once the migration is complete, set this value back to 1.

I've outlined this and a few other tips to speed up migration in more detail here:
