Mailbox Move error
We have a helpdesk that is remote and has a site to site VPN with our company. There are no ports blocked between our Exchange servers and their network. We configured a laptop that has the Exchange Admin console on it and worked fine at our location. The laptop is joined to our domain and has our DNS and DCs taht it points to, but whenever we try to move a mailbox in between stores we get the error below. We need to be able to accomplish moves remotely. This happens on all mailbox moves from their location, but I can move them fine from mine. Error was found for [user] because: Error occured in the step: Opening source mailbox with error: An unknown error has occured., error code -1056749257Exchange Management Shell command attempted:'xxx.com/Archived Users/[Username]' | move-mailbox -TargetDatabase 'XXXExcMB\Archived Mailboxes\DB-AM' -GlobalCatalog 'DC1.xxx.com'Elapsed Time: 00:00:23Any ideas?

Can you perform this operation from the console of one of the Exchange servers?

Hi,
From your description, I understand that the you cannot move mailbox from remote server to the local server. Nevertheless, you can move mailbox from local server to remote server. In addition, the issue only occurs when moving mailbox by using laptop remotely. If I misunderstood your means, please let me know.
Please also let me know:
1. Whether Outlook installed on the laptop? If yes, please remove it and check the issue again
2. Whether Remote Exchange server and Local Exchange Server in the Same Domain
3. Whether the both Exchange servers are Exchange 2007 Service Pack 1?
4. In addition, please increase the Diagnostic Logging for Move Mailbox to troubleshoot the issue:
Set-EventLogLevel MSExchangeIS\9002 System\Move Mailbox Level Expert
5. Please also check the related log file regarding moving mailbox. You can locate the log files here:

I am also getting an error code of 1056749257. A web search lead me to this discussion.
We recently installed Exchange 2007 and are in the process of moving mailboxes from the 03 server to the 07 server. In my case I am trying to set permissions for an Exchange technician account to move the mailboxes.
I have given the technician account the Exchange Recipient Administrator Role.
I did the Set-EventLogLevel MSExchangeIS\9002 System\Move Mailbox Level Expert and tried to move a mailbox. The event log shows Event ID: 1006 - The move-mailbox task for xxx started
The next event is ID: 1008 - The move-mailbox task for mailbox xxx failed. Error: Unable to lock mailbox with error: An unknown error has occurred.
Any ideas/suggestions?
Thanks.
-Scott

I figured my problem out. In addition to giving the account the Exchange Recipient Administrator role, it has to also have the Exchange Server role and be a member of the local Admin group onthe source and target servers.
